A meteor shower destroys the NASA satellite an astronaut is working on, the shuttle with the rest of the crew, and most part of New York as that’s where it landed.

The NASA scientists come to the conclusion in 18 days a global k1ller the size of Texas will follow. They come up with a plan to fly a rocket with astronauts to drill into the asteroid in order to b0mb it into pieces which will pass by earth instead of hitting it. And they need the best people to do it, for they only get one try .

Harry Stamper is a 3d generation oil driller, who fights with AJ for not following his orders. He gets really mad when he finds his daughter in his bed, and gets his rifle and starts sho0ting at him.

This drives a wedge between Harry and his daughter, as she says she’s been dating AJ for 5 months, and it’s serious, she doesn’t want to leave him for he says so, she’s a grown woman.

The commander of the US air forces comes to talk to Harry right after he fights with his daughter and strikes oil. The two of them agree to go with them to the NASA base in Texas, and hearing the news, Harry decides he needs his best team, which is the people we just saw him working with on the oil rig.

His team agrees to do it if they’ll never have to pay taxes, among other things.

They are tested and cleared for the space mission, they train and the day before flying to space, AJ proposes to Grace, Chick goes to see his estranged son due to his gambling problem and Rockhound gets a huge loan from a loan shark just to spend it on strippers!

That night, another meteor shower lands on East Asia wrecking havoc.

The men board on two shuttles and once in space they dock on the Russian space station to fill the tanks with fuel, and they destroy it. Unintentionally. Of course. But the Russian astronaut (who’s been on the station for 18 months) manages to escape to one of their shuttles with them.

They sling shot around the moon, in order to land on the asteroid.

Entering the asteroid’s atmosphere, one of the shuttles gets hit by the small rocks floating around it.The astronauts flying the shuttle tell the men who are with them, like AJ, to lock themselves in the cargo bay.

Will the rest of the team be able to finish their mission, and if so, will they be able to make it out alive?

I personally liked the movie.As always in the Michael Bay directed movies produced by Jerry Bruckheimer there’s beautiful vivid colors (they remind me of summer days and the warm light before the twilight),funny comments or scenes, explosions and beautiful shots.

I like how Michael Bay directs, the angles he takes his shots from.

One thing that bothered me is at the beginning of the movie, when the astronaut works on the satellite, the debris hits him right in the screen of his helmet, so in the face, breaking it, but he can scream in space- shouldn’t that blow to the face k1ll him instantly, not to mention the lack of oxygen and freezing cold of space?!

Also, I don’t think one can last on a space station for a year and a half.

The movie was co-written by J.J. Abrams.

The acting was good.

Eddie Griffin has a cameo at the beginning of the movie when the first pieces fall from the asteroid. So does Michael Bay, who appears right after, as a scientist in a team of scientists.

The soundtrack was good, with choirs ( I love choirs).

The visual effects were good.

The movie holds a 73% popcorn meter on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.7 rating on IMDB.

Cinema Score audiences graded the movie an A-.

The movie grossed 553.7 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 140 million dollars, being the highest grossing movie of the year 1998, and the highest grossing Touchstone Pictures movie.

The movie was nominated for many awards, including for 4 Oscars, 7 Saturn Awards, 2 Satellite Awards, a Grammy Award, but also for 7 Golden Raspberry Awards, and 5 Stinkers Bad Movies Awards !
