The movie is based on the young adult book of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (which I read, and has more information; I particularly like the scene in which Geneveive brings her man back, and unlike in the movie, she does not k1ll him! That scene is so much better in the book) ,released in 2009, from the Caster Chronicles.
Ethan, a teenager who lives in Gatlin, South Carolina, has dreams about a mysterious girl every night, for some time now.
On his first day of junior year, he meets Lena Duchannes, whom the other, religious girls, in the class, don't like, due to the fact they think her a witch.
On his way home, while pouring raining, he almost runs her over, as the rain was so dense, he couldn't see anything ahead. He offers to give her a ride, and after fighting with him, she accepts. He is trying to talk to her, but she is not giving him the time of day.
He reads the book he sees her reading, and loves it.
He also found a necklace, and thinks about giving it to her.
Next day, in class, Ethan's ex, a very religious girl, starts praying with her friend for Lena to be kicked out of school,as they think her family satanists, and the windows smash.
Concerned about her, as he thinks she's the girl in his dreams, Ethan goes to her estate, and they bond over things they like.
Her uncle, Macon, is putting a spell on him, making him say things he wouldn't say, trying to scare him into staying away from them.
That doesn't stop Ethan from coming right back, to give Lena the necklace. When he places it in her hand, as they both touch it, they have visions of a war and two people kissing.
Ethan wakes up at home, and he freaks out as he has no memory of how he got there.
Lena is told she's not allowed to be with him, as they have to stay away from mortals, and although she is trying to stay away from him, as she fears the moon will claim her, she is drawn to him, and they do date.
On a movie date, when they both touch the necklace, they see the past, when Geneveive brought back to life her loved one, turning dark, right after.
Lena doesn't know what to do, as she loves Ethan, but she's afraid she or the ev1l,claimed members of her family might hurt him, so she is trying to find a way for them to be together. But what if there is none?
I enjoyed the movie, but I'm sorry to say the book was better, and gives more information on everything. It didn't make sense in the movie why are they claimed at age 16, while in the book it says why, and they are claimed by the moon, due to what Geneveive did, the moon choosing which turns good or bad, it has nothing to do with their true nature!
Speaking of the book, the movie deviated a lot from it.
The movie has a good, summer vibe, it has good energy, sort of speak.
The acting was good. Emma Thompson was the best, I just loved her. Viola Davis always acts the same, every character, to the point I'm thinking that's how she is, grumpy.
The soundtrack, written by English alternative rock band, Thenewno2, was beautiful and serene,it matched the magical vibe of the movie.
The visual effects were good.
The movie received mixed reviews from critics, and grossed 60 million dollars against a budget of around 60 million, being one of the biggest box office bombs of 2013!
CinemaScore audiences gave the movie a B, on an A+ to F scale.
The movie is for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv, Fandango at Home.
Rating : Worth a watch !
