The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, published in 2014.
The movie opens with Malorie telling her kids, whom she didn't name, calling them boy and girl, to never take off their blindfold on their trip, as they will die.
She gets to the river by holding on to a wire, while wearing a blindfold.
5 years prior, we see Malorie and her sister, finding out about the outbreak of people k1lling themselves in Russia.
They go to the doctor together, as Malorie is pregnant, and single. She doesn't seem to be happy about it (as the father left her), as she doesn't love her child, and is considering giving it for adoption.
When they leave the doctor's office they see happening in the US what happens in Russia. People start k1lling themselves in the street.
Malorie and her sister drive off, and while Malorie looks for her sister's phone in the backseat, her sister sees whatever the other people are seeing, which seems to scare her, and gets into a car accident.
Malorie seems to be fine, getting out of the trashed car. Her sister walks in front of a bus, and dies.
A woman tries to save Malorie, but she hears and sees her mother, and gets into a burning car!
A man helps her, and another woman follows them.
They get into a man's house, and quite a few people are already there.
They decide to close the windows and cover them, while Malorie is trying to call her mother.
A man who did research for a book he writes, thinks these are the demons of the Judgement Day who take the shape of your deepest sadness, greatest loss or fear.
After a while, the owner of the house decides to look at the screens in his office, as his place has cameras all around, and it doesn't end up well for him.
Another pregnant woman joins them, and soon they are out of supplies, and have to go to the market.
They decide to paint and cover the car's windows, and drive with the help of the GPS. When they get to the store one of them works at (Charlie), some of them say they could just live there, as they have all they need, while Malorie says they can't leave the others starve.
One of Charlie's colleagues at the store is trapped in the freezer, and we soon realize the man is insane, trying to k1ll them. Charlie sacrifices himself trying to save them.
They manage to make it back, and at night, the young couple staying with them takes their car (I'm guessing to get to the store and live there) and leaves them there.
Soon, a man knocks on their door, and again, he is let in, while the voice of reason, who is supposed to be the bad guy of the movie, because he's always talking against what everyone else is saying, is telling them they need to stop letting people in, because they don't know if they are a friend or foe!
Turns out the insane people aren't affected, their eyes turn, but they don't k1ll themselves, they want the others to "see" the "beautiful" things they are seeing, k1lling them!
While the events of the present unfold, we see Malorie and the kids on the river, trying to get to a secluded place, safe from whatever is hunting people trying to make them k1ll themselves.
I personally enjoyed the movie. I think these creatures were definitely demons, as when they "get" someone, their eyes change, which to me means that they are possessed.
You can never see the creatures, they only appear in the drawings of the insane man who wants to k1ll them. Other than that, it's just the wind, the leaves rising up with it, and voices whispering to them to look.
I also liked the "twist" with Malorie not loving her baby while she was pregnant, but now, obviously, loving the child, and prioritizing him over the girl, who's not hers!
The movie is called Bird Box because she carries a box with her with birds, as the birds get agitated when these creatures appear.
The acting was good, as the actors had to act scared and cry.
The soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was good.
The movie received mixed reviews ,and it was Netflix's most watched movie at the time of its release.
It has a spin off sequel, Bird Box Barcelona, released in 2023.
The movie was in the works since before the book's release, in 2013!
Rating : Worth a watch!
