Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights
Year of release : 1992
Run time : 1h46m
Genre : Drama
Cast : Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Jeremy Northam
The movie is based on Emily Bronte's book of the same name, published in 1847.
The movie opens with Emily Bronte who visits the manor which is now in ruins, and remembers Catherine and Heathcliff. Her mind goes to the night when Heathcliff's tenant comes to the manor, and is given, by Catherine's daughter, Heathcliff's old room, which is haunted by her mother.
The story then goes to the beginning, when Catherine's father brings Heathcliff to their home one evening, as he says he found him on the street. Her father calls him a gift from God, while her brother calls him a "filthy g1psy". Her brother hates him and hits him whenever he is given the chance, while Catherine becomes his best friend, and the old man holds him as his favorite child.
The old man dies, and Catherine's brother moves him to the stables.
This doesn't stop Catherine from spending time with him, as they seem to love each other.
This changes one evening, when the two spy on Edgar and Isabella Linton, and running away, Catherine hurts her leg (in the book the Linton dogs attack her).
She spends 3 months at the Linton manor, and when she comes back home, she tells Nelly Edgar proposed to her. Nelly asks her if she's sure about marrying Edgar, and Catherine says she does love him, not as much as she does Heathcliff, but marrying Heathcliff would degrade her! Heathcliff hears all this, and disappears for two years.
Catherine waits for him for a year, and then marries Edgar.
Heathcliff comes back a year later, and he's rich. They start with this annoying and ridiculous habit of being rude to Edgar, thing which makes them both unlikeable.
I personally hated the movie, as nothing happens, and moves slowly. I also read the book, many years ago,and didn't like it, and I thought Heathcliff was an atrocious character.
The characters, the 2 leads, and Catherine's brother, are unlikeable, as Heathcliff and Catherine's brother are awful to everyone, and Catherine starts on this path also, after getting married and acting like a spoiled child towards her husband regarding Heathcliff.
When they die, I felt nothing, because they were awful to everyone, Heathcliff was despicable, SPOILERS as he was b3ating Isabella, who actually loved him! He does more atrocious things to her in the book. Not to mention, she gets his vengeance on people who didn't do anything to him (kids of the people who were mean to him) for what their parents did to him, or he thinks they did to him!
Catherine is worse in the book, also, I thought in the movie she's not painted in such bleak colors.
The actors were good. This was apparently Ralph Fiennes' first movie.
One of my favorite singers, Sinead O'Connor, appears at the beginning and end of the movie and is the narrator.
The soundtrack was so an so.
The visual effects consisting of the ghost, weren't that amazing.
The movie received negative reviews from critics, with only 31 % being positive.
