The movie was adapted from Jane Austen's Emma, originally published in 1815.
After luckily matching her governess to a widower, Emma fancies herself a match maker, and thinks of who could be her next victims .
She sets her eyes on Harriet, who already has a love interest who proposes to her, but Emma tells her to refuse him,as she can do better! She tells her to aim for the vicar, who seems more interested in Emma.
Low and behold, after quite some wasted time in which Harriet could have been happily married to the one she wanted, the vicar expresses his feelings for Emma, and poor Harriet, who can't think for herself, is heartbroken.
Emma's father is a self centered man and in need of attention, like a child. Speaking of which, the women of the movie seem very silly for their age,21 years old. They still act and think like 14-15 year old girls.
Emma was ridiculous, meddling in other people's affairs, while Harriet seemed a bit silly, unsure of her own feelings, needing Emma to tell her what to feel,-who to love-,and what to think, when she was a grown woman! Jane Fairfax was the only one who seemed to act her age, very collected, speaking without saying much, remaining a mystery.
The characters of the time were consumed with what others did, very curious in nature, which I found rather boring! They always talked about what someone did, reflecting on full conversations, always reading someone's letter..their lives seemed so boring, having to do nothing all day, just gossiping about other people!
They also seemed very worried about sore throats and catching a cold! To them it was like a life and death situation!
The actors were flawless,I thought the best was Sophie Thompson who played Miss Bates,as she had a certain way about herself, certain quirks, and she was just wonderful!
The set design was wonderful. The movie had this beautiful golden palette, as if the sun was always shining.
The costumes were beautiful, I loved the women's clothes.
I didn't care for the soundtrack.
