The movie is based on the 1993 memoir by Susanna Kaysen with the same title.

The year is 1967, and 18 year old Susanna Kaysen takes a b0ttle of p1lls with a b0ttle of vodka, for a head ache. She keeps on saying she didn't want to k1ll herself, but later on, we discover she did.

This makes her parents call their friend who is a psychiatrist, who calls a cab for her who takes her to the women's psychiatric hospital. Although against her wishes, she has to check herself into Claymoore.

There, she befriends Polly or Torch, a teen who's face is burnt in a sixth grade fire, and Georgina (Susanna's roommate), who is a pathological liar, lies she set herself on f1re; Daisy, who doesn't eat but takes laxatives, and keeps the chicken her father brings her under her bed until they rot; Janet who is an anorexic.

One day they bring Lisa (who keeps escaping the institution) back, who, on their first encounter, attacks and scares her, as she is asking her where is her best friend, and why is she in her room.

After this encounter, the two befriend, and Lisa encourages Susanna to stop taking her pills.

Lisa, who is a sociopath, encourages the other girls to sneak into the facility's tunnels at night, to play bowling, and break into the psychiatrists' offices to read their own files.

This is how Susanna finds out she has a borderline personality disorder.

Daisy is being released, although she is not better, and brags about how her father (whom according to Lisa, everybody knows he s3xually assaults her) got her an apartment with "an eating chicken", as she can never say "eating kitchen".

Lisa makes Susanna escape with her after Lisa is given electroshock therapy for attempting to help Polly with the other girls, by singing to her at night, as she had a crying episode.

Having no money, they go to Daisy's place, and although the girl offers them a place to stay, Lisa is being mean to her, to the point the girl is taking her own l1fe.

This makes Susanna want to get better, while Lisa runs away.

I personally enjoyed the movie. I loved how the movie was directed the first half an hour, how it makes the transition from scene to scene, as if we're in Susanna's head, as if she is dreaming, and falls from dream to dream, or falls from dream to reality, from past to the present, and it's hard for her to stay focused, present or awake .

The actors were great, as most of them had to play women with mental problems. Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Elisabeth Moss were the best.

I liked the soundtrack and the songs chosen for the movie.

The movie received mixed reviews, and grossed 48.3 million dollars against a budget of 24 million.

Cinema Score audiences graded the movie a B.

The author of the book accused the director of adding "melodramatic drivel" such as Lisa and Susanna running away together.

Actresses like Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Christina Ricci, Katie Holmes, and even singers like Courtney Love and Alanis Morissette were interested in the roles.

Parker Posey turned down the part of Lisa, role which brought Angelina Jolie the Oscar, the Golden Globe, and many other awards and nominations!

Leelee Sobieski was supposed to play Daisy, but dropped after being offered "Joan of Arc".
