The movie is a remake of the 1974 American movie of the same name written, directed, produced by H.B. Halicki, who also played in the original.
Kip Raines is a car thief, who is stealing 50 expensive cars for a British gangster. He has the amazing idea of stealing a Porsche from a showroom, and then an even more amazing idea, of starting a car race with a random stranger. Due to this, he gets under the police’s radar, and ends up being chased by the police with the helicopter, leading the police to his crew’s warehouse! You’d think nobody is that stupid, but he is!
Two police detectives who investigate stolen cars, impound the cars they find in the warehouse, and start an investigation.
Randall known as Memphis, is Kip’s brother, who left the US after his mother asked him to leave the car thief business, because his brother was following in his footsteps. He is now teaching kids how to drive kids’ race cars at the tracks. He is approached by one of his former partners, Jackson, who is now the gangster’s associate. He tells him Kip messed up his business, and now the gangster wants him dead.
Randall meets with the gangster, Calitri, when he was about to crush Kip in a car crusher. He accepts to steal 50 high-end cars his brother was supposed to steal for him (which he did, but he led the police to the place where they were), in return for his brother’s life.
Randall starts calling his former partners in crime. Some of them are dead, some in jail, and only a few are left, so he agrees to work with his brother and his crew.
I personally didn’t like the movie, it bored me. It’s the first time I ever watched it and I feel that if I didn’t watch it I wouldn’t have missed a thing.
The movie doesn’t have love or a love story to keep it together. It attempts to have one, through Nicolas Cage and Angelina’s characters, but it doesn’t go anywhere.
I didn’t like the characters, they were criminals. I honestly wanted them to be caught by the police. They also talk as if rich people don’t work for their money, and get their cars for free.
I hated their names and nicknames.
The movie was filmed on a brown color palette, looking as if we’re watching the movie though sun glasses. Dominic Sena, who directed the movie, also directed Swordfish, which is on the same color palette, so it seems this is his signature.
The movie was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
The acting was good. Angelina Jolie is the only woman in the movie, and has a small role. Well, there’s also Randall and Kip’s mother, who appears for a few minutes, and a woman who can’t drive, who also appears for a few minutes, total.
The visual effects were good.
The soundtrack was Ok, but it felt it was on when it shouldn’t have been, and at times didn’t match. I liked how it sounded when it was 20 minutes left ‘till the end, at the car chasing scene.
The beautiful song by The Cult “Painted on my heart” only appears in the movie like a sort of memory, you can only hear a few lines almost without music. It’s played after, at the end, and it feels it doesn’t match the movie.
The movie received negative reviews, but grossed 237 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of around 103 million dollars.
Cinema Score audiences graded it a B+.
The movie won the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards for “Worst Screenplay for a Film That Grosses Over 100 Million Dollars Using Hollywood Math” and for “ Most Intrusive Musical Score”. Angelina Jolie also received a nomination for “Worst On-Screen Hairstyle”. Her hair did look like she didn’t brush it.
