The movie is written and directed by Bruce Robinson.
After divorcing his cheating wife,John Berlin moves to Eurika,California, from Los Angeles, taking the advice of his old friend,Ross.
Unable to find his place,he comes to a garbage dump site, where his colleagues found a dead body. While looking for the murder weapon, they find a hand.
Berlin thinks the hand might belong to someone long dead,so he starts asking the police officers about unsolved murders. One police officer tells him about a body found with missing parts, they were never able to identify, filed under Jennifer, under detective John Taylor's name.
John Taylor doesn't like him because he thinks he stole his promotion. But that might not be the only reason.
Researching the hand,Berlin finds these scars on the woman's fingers, and he realizes she was blind. He comes to the conclusion the two women were murdered by the same man.
While doing his investigation, nobody believes him, nobody is on his side.
His former colleagues from L.A. discover,at his request, that there were 7 girls missing or found dead, and the one found at the dump site, was number 8.So,Jennifer 8,the 8th victim.
He finds out a blind woman is missing, for 6 weeks now,and goes to the institute for blind people she studied at. He wants to talk to the woman who saw Amber the week she went missing.
She tells him the man Amber dated acted like a blind person, shaking hands like they do,and such. And that his name was John.
While he's doing research, investigating all this, the rest of the police think him crazy for some unknown reason, laughing at him. The blind woman remembers more things about the man dating her friend, but the police think her an unreliable witness, discarding everything she says,Berlin being the only one who believes her.
To be honest, he rest of the police force is just incompetent, and they really annoyed me with their incompetence, and their hating on Berlin for being "an L.A. big shot".
Berlin is attracted to the blind woman, and starts a relationship with her. His sister says she looks just like his ex wife.
After a serious scare,as while she was bathing a man was taking pictures of her,Berlin takes her to his place, thinking that was the k1ller who wanted to k1ll her.
I personally enjoyed the movie, and liked the fact it narrates the story of the detectives doing their job,but it also takes the time to show us their private lives, merging the action with the emotion.
What bothered me was the endless scenes with the detectives drilling Berlin, over and over again, thinking he k1lled his best friend, which was so annoying, the scenes were long and they just kept coming! When I thought they were done with it,there was another scene, and another!
The actors were good, especially Uma Thurman who had to play a blind woman.
The soundtrack was good. The movie is most of the time silent, unlike the movies of today which have a soundtrack 90% of the time, and when the music kicks in,it's really good, merging perfectly.
The movie was a flop, grossing 11.3 million dollars at the box office, against a box office of 20 million.
The movie is free with ads on PlutoTv, and for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv, Fandango at Home.
Rating : Worth a watch!
