Lost things
Year of release : 2003
Run time : 1h24m
Genre : Mystery / Suspense / Psychological Thriller / Horror
4 teenagers, 2 girls and 2 boys, tell their parents they are going away for the weekend, the girls lie they are going to a sleepover to one of their friend’s place, while the boys tell them the truth, that they are going surfing.
Stopping to read the map, one of the boys feels he’s been to that place before, and when he tells the others, they laugh at him.
Once they get to the beach, they get a weird feeling, seeing crows everywhere and a broken female mannequin. The girls start worrying about the vibes the beach gives them (after they fight over the boys), while the boys think they’re just over reacting, although they are ready to leave if they want to.
They meet a stranger who tells them kids like them died on that beach, and that they should leave unless they want to die. Emily seems to recognize the man, and asks her friends to leave .She does remember that 3 people died on that beach while one disappeared.
Every once in a while, they see one of them staring in contemplation, ignoring their call when they call them (SPOILER At the reveal we realize it’s the moment when they realize they are dead).
The girls start finding things on the beach, like a withered bouquet of flowers, which makes one of them say probably because somebody died there, hence the bouquet. The same girl,Tracey, finds her ring which she didn’t know she lost (SPOILER We see later that it fell off her finger when she was k1lled) .
The girls keep on getting weird vibes, wanting to leave, changing their minds once they talk to the boys, who, honestly ,don’t mind leaving, if they truly want to.
I personally enjoyed the movie. This is a movie I‘ve been looking for for 20 years, since I watched it on HBO. I liked its subject, the twist towards the end. Evanescence’s song, “Fields of innocence” reminds me of this movie.
One of the boys gets a flashback of the man who keeps on imposing on them, and when he does, the man says something like “you finally remember”!
Emily also seems to know more than she actually says, and when finding her diary, the others see she wrote weird things in there, like there’s no meaning to what they live, making them think she wrote about life being meaningless, but maybe it was about what they were going through, as she realized what was going on.
SPOILERS – The teenagers are trapped in the afterlife with their k1ller, on the beach they died, reliving the last hours of their lives. They don’t remember what happened to them, and after they do, everything goes back to the beginning, meaning maybe they black it out due to fear of the unknown, and are stuck in a continuous loop afraid to cross over.
The title of the movie comes from the things they find on the beach, and realize it’s theirs. END OF SPOILERS
I liked how the movie was shot, the close-ups of the plants on the beach in the wind..it gives the movie a pensive vibe which matches what’s going on.
I liked the place where they filmed, it was so beautiful there, it looked like a postcard!
I liked the colors of the beach.
It’s a little movie that could, which is definitely worth a watch !
The actors were great.
The soundtrack was good, eerie..The movie is not scary per se, but the soundtrack makes it scary.
