The movie was written by Nia Vardalos who plays Toula.
Toula is a 30 year old woman, living in Chicago with her Greek family. Her family is very Greek traditional, and her father is very Greek proud, strict and old fashioned, as he wants her to marry a Greek man, calling her old. Growing up, she had to study at a Greek school, and their house in the middle class part of the city, looked (still looks ) like a Greek temple with statues of the Greek gods, while the garage door displayed the Greek flag. He also thinks any word in English, and not only, comes from a Greek word.
Toula works at her family’s restaurant, since she doesn’t have a husband. Most of the things her father says to her is that she looks so old, and is trying to make her go to Greece to find a Greek man to marry.
One day, Toula sees Ian Miller, a high school teacher, that she seems to find attractive. That scene was ridiculously funny, I laughed with tears.
The very same evening she tells her father she wants to take computer classes so she could run their restaurant better, but her father starts crying, thinking she wants to leave him (that very same day he was talking to their relatives about finding her a husband, and that she’d never leave him), and when asked about him not wanting her to do something with her life, he tells her again, to get married and have kids, because she looks so old!
Her mother convinces her father to let her take the computer classes,and she starts putting make-up on,ditching the glasses wearing contacts,and curling her hair.
She wants to work for her aunt at her travel agency, who hires her, and the 2 of them and her mother, convince her strict father to let her work for her aunt!
One day, while working for the travel agency, Ian sees her, and when she sees him she acts weird again.
Ian passes by her work again, and tries to impress her through the front window, instead of just coming inside, so her crazy matches his crazy.
The two start dating, and Toula starts lying to her father she’s taking pottery classes, as she knows her father wants her to marry a Greek man.
Because their relationship runs smoothly, Toula has Ian meet her family after they find out about it, and her father freaks out, saying he had to ask permission to date her (which he refuses to give,by the way) forbidding her to see him, and starts bringing Greek men (who look so old) for dinner for her to date.
This doesn’t stop the two from dating, and Ian proposes to Toula, and one of them has to turn to the other one’s religion to do so. Guess who.
I personally loved the movie and laughed with tears in the first part.Her family reminded me of my own, who have been obsessed with me getting married and have kids since I turned 21 . We have Moussaka too, and it’s one of my favorite dishes, I cook it all the time!
The acting was good.
The soundtrack consisted of Greek music.
The movie was produced by Tom Hanks.
The movie received positive reviews from critics, and holds a 6.7 user score on Metacritic, a 73% popcorn meter on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.6 out of 10 rating on IMDB.
Cinema Score audiences graded the movie an A-.
The movie grossed 368.7 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 5 million dollars, being the 9th highest grossing movie of the year 2002!
The movie was nominated for a few awards, among which an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and 2 Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actress Musical or Comedy, for Nia Vardalos.
The movie has a 2003 sitcom “My big fat Greek life” and the 2016 sequel “My big fat Greek wedding”.
