Nomis, also known as Night Hunter, was written and directed by David Raymond.

The movie opens with a girl, who runs, half naked, in the middle of the night, on a freezing cold winter. When her chaser catches up with her, she jumps over the bridge, on a truck transporting wood, and is found dead a while after. The police find out she was tied up, given birth control pills and that they broke her eardrums.

Police detective Walter Marshall is going to his ex wife’s place, to get his daughter, and he finds her fighting with her mother, about the latter going through her things. Hearing about the pictures she’s been posting, he wants to see them, and then checks the conversations she’s been having with “boys”.

Lara is on a date with a man who could be her father, who is trying to convince her to join him in his room.

While in his room, her adoptive father, Michael Cooper, who used to be a judge, and now is hunting predators with Lara’s help, shows up and hits him with a baseball bat.

When the man wakes up, he tells him he castrated him, and if he wants to call the police everyone will know about his proclivities.

Lara is then waiting for her new mark, but he doesn’t show up. She calls Cooper to go get her, but when she goes outside, she is kidnapped.

Tracking her through her earrings, Cooper is frantically chasing the kidnapper’s car, but an old man drives into his car. SPOILER Later on, it’s revealed the old man was the kidnapper’s father and was helping him! END OF SPOILER

Taken to the police, Cooper tells them he was tracking the man who took his daughter. Walter decides to help him. The police end up at a house where loud Christmas music is being played while a seemingly deranged man is dancing. They find Lara in a sort of closet, and another girl, in another closet. Lara is fine, but the other girl had her eardrums broken, and she needs a hearing device.

The man is taken into police custody, but they can’t reason with him, as he seems mentally impaired.

The girl who can’t hear tells the police the man seems to suffer from split personality, as she saw him either as nice and wanting to play, either downright evil.

Rachel Chase, who’s a profiler and psychiatrist, is trying to figure out if he is in his right mind or not, while the commissioner just wants him put in jail.

Looking into the man’s past, they find out his name is Simon, and he was born out of r@pe, his mother ending up k1lling herself years later.

While Simon is in custody, and Rachel is trying to make him talk, the 6 police officers looking through his house are k1lled with gas, and the commissioner is losing his patience with him, while Walter thinks somebody else is helping him.

I personally enjoyed the movie, it’s atmospheric. Walter seems sad, consumed with finding the bad guys, so much so, he doesn’t have time for what matters, his family.

Rachel is trying to get though to Simon, wanting to help him, and make sure she doesn’t put an innocent man in jail.

Cooper is trying to keep the bad guys off the streets, after his family was k1lled by one. He sees Lara as his own daughter, ready to do anything for her. The feeling is mutual, as Lara sees in Cooper a father figure. I personally liked these two a lot, I would have watched a movie just about the 2 of them.

The characters are likeable, the villain, hateable.

Nomis is Simon written backwards, and is supposed to represent his duality and hidden nature.

The acting was good, especially from Brendan Fletcher, who played double role, the twins. He deserves an Oscar for these roles.

Nathan Fillion has a small role.

The soundtrack was great, merging with the visuals.

Nomis is a 6 out of 10 on IMDB. On Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, the critics’ ratings are under 31% while the audience scores are under 5.2 / 50%.
