The British television movie is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1817 book of the same name.
Catherine grew up in a family of 10 children! One day, mister and missus Allen invite her to come with them to Bath.
Catherine loves to read Gothic novels, so, whenever she reads one, she envisions herself as the lead. This time she is about to become the lead in her own story, as while out in Bath, she meets two gentlemen who seem to like her, Henry Tilney and John Thorpe. While Henry seems honest and nice, John and his sister seem fake, they always seem to say one thing and mean another.
Catherine caught them in a lie once or twice, but due to her innocent nature she keeps on forgiving them.
John's sister, Isabella, is engaged to Catherine's brother, but she flirts with men at parties. When Catherine's brother tells Isabella his parents can only give them 400 pounds a year, if he wants to wed Isabella, Isabella complains to Catherine about it, and starts looking at other suitors (although still engaged to her brother).
Henry's father extends an invitation to Catherine, to join them at Northanger Abbey. Henry tries to be funny, so he tells her the place is full of horrors, with dungeons and skeletons and such, and gets her imagination going.
I personally enjoyed the movie, it had beautiful scenery and outfits. The lead was very innocent, and some of the characters, like the Thorpes take advantage of her. Another one who treats her badly is Henry's father, who only invited her to their place thinking her very rich, and when he hears she's not, he throws her out in the middle of the night!
After this, she still forgives Henry for not helping her (in that day of age, they let her travel alone, in the middle of the night, with strangers. Their carriage (not them) just dropped her somewhere without concern for her well being or safety, and she waited for the carriage to take her home(like we wait for the bus), and thinks she's to blame for how she was treated!
The soundtrack was good.
The actors were good. Felicity Jones was good at playing the innocent Catherine who doesn't want to upset anyone with her presence, and Carey Mulligan was good at playing the two faced Isabella who only saw her own interest.
