Rassvet / Quiet comes the dawn

Language : Russian

Year of release : 2019

Run time : 1h38m

Genre : Horror

The movie opens in 1999, when Maria, the mother of Svetlana and Kuzma, her older brother, is trying to run away from something or someone, but dies.

Svetlana turns 20, and her brother stays over. She wakes up in the middle of the night, after a nightmare, and she sees her brother jumping off the kitchen window!

After, Svetlana starts having very vivid nightmares, as if she is awake. I loved the one before and during his funeral, which looked like it was happening to her, and she was buried alive! It was so beautifully shot.

She finds a professor at the Institute of Somnology who offers group sessions so the people would help each other in the dream world. Her friend of six months (this is important at the end) drives her there, and she and other 3 people sink into a deep sleep during the night.

They all find themselves in the same dream which slowly turns into a nightmare they can't wake up from.

The movie started out well, I loved the first part, but in the second it just turns into a mindless horror, feeling like a sort of twisted slasher movie.

I liked how the movie was shot, the angles, the buildings, but then, slowly, it turned into a horror for the sake of horror, in which nothing made sense, the characters were hunted by their nightmare characters, and they end up turning on each other.

The movie is saved by the twist at the end. Ironically, when she went to the institute, I was thinking that I wouldn't go to such a place, as you don't know which are their true motives, and what are they doing to you while you're out of it!

The actors were great, especially our lead, Aleksandra Drozdova, and Oksana Akinshina, who plays her mother, and only appears for maybe, 5 minutes.

The soundtrack was great!

The visual effects were good.

"Rassvet" means dawn or sunrise.

The movie received negative reviews, the critics complaining about the "illogical and incoherent plot".

You can watch the full movie for free, if you follow this link, but it only has auto generated subtitles and they are mostly not there, and bad; if you don't know Russian, you won't understand much :
