The movie is a remake of the 1987 movie of the same name ,and the 4th installment of the franchise.
The year is 2028,and a multinational conglomerate creates robot peacekeepers who can maintain law and order, using them in war zones around the world. The CEO of the conglomerate, Sellars, is trying to bring this to the USA, but is stopped by the Dreyfus Act. Knowing that americans refuse the use of military systems in their community, he asks doctor Norton (who works with people with disabilities, creating robotic limbs for those who lost their arms or legs) to find a way. So, they come up with the idea of creating a cyborg police officer. But they need someone stable.
Detroit police detective,Alex Murphy, who is undercover, trying to catch crime boss Antoine Vallon, is being taken out by his own colleagues (who work for the crime boss) when he gets too close, as they put a bomb in his car.
Most of his body is burnt,Alex being in critical condition, and the company creating robotics convinces Alex's wife to sign off on the procedure. When Alex wakes up,and realizes there's not much left of him(really, there's only his head, lungs and hand!), he panics, breaks out of the facility, wanting out. He is shut down, and brought back in.
The doctor is making him more machine than human in combat, and he is given access to all the police files, starting to catch the bad guys who until now were impossible to spot.
The movie was entertaining, I was interested in what was on the screen,I didn't feel the need to check my phone, the way today's Hollywood movies make me. One thing that took me out of it was, the fact I would never accept to live like that,I kept on thinking,I'd want to die, instead of living like a robot, that is no life! Speaking of which, I think his wife was lied to at the beginning, as they showed her a picture of him, talking about his injuries, telling her he's only missing an arm and leg and can't see with an eye, but when he's put into a cyborg, 99 % of him is gone!
The actors were good.
The visual effects were pretty good. I particularly liked the scene in which he is taken out of the dream world, and his wife walks away from him,as everything is being erased, and turns into the lab.
The soundtrack was good.
The movie received mixed reviews, the critics thinking it inferior to the original, ironically, I liked it more than the original!
Cinema Score audiences gave the movie a B+ on an A+ to F scale.
The movie grossed 242.6 million dollars against a budget of around 130 million.
Michael Fassbender and Russell Crowe were considered for the title role.Hugh Laurie and Clive Owen were supposed to play the CEO until Michael Keaton got the role. Edward Norton, Sean Penn and even Rebecca Hall were considered to play the cast, as in Dr.Norton, Novak, and Clara Murphy!
