Run time : 1h33m
Genre : Psychological Horror / Mystery
Director : Brian de Palma
Co-written by Brian de Palma, the movie was inspired by the Soviet conjoined twins Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova (who, although at first normal, started developing psychological problems, one of them having a disturbing look on her face), and features stories and even visual references from the Hitchcock movies, De Palma even hiring Hichcock's composer, Bernard Herrmann.
Danielle meets Philip at a Candid Camera tv show, where she wins a cutlery set, and he wins a dinner for two at a restaurant. Danielle finds him outside and convinces him to take her to the restaurant as his date. Things go well, and he ends up taking her home, on Staten Island.
Danielle is stalked by her husband, whom she says she divorced, and Philip manages to trick him, by pretending to leave her apartment, and coming back.
The joke's on him, as the next morning, after buying Danielle a birthday cake, as she tells him her sister , Dominique, came to spend their birthday together, and is not happy about her having a man there, he get stabb3d to death by Dominique..or Danielle.
Scared,Danielle, calls her husband, telling him she's out of the pills she was taking. Her husband comes and cleans the place up,putting the body in the couch, as Danielle puts on her makeup.
At the same time, a journalist from the building across the street, sees the murder happening, and calls the police. The police are reluctant, and think she might have imagined everything.
They check the apartment as she insists on them doing so.
They don't find anything, but the journalist thinks she hid the body. She calls a few people, hires a private detective, and investigates on her own. They see Danielle and her husband take out the couch, and the detective follows the moving truck.
The journalist starts investigating Danielle.
The movie is interesting and entertaining, starting with the story, the split screen Brian de Palma got his viewers used to (with long tracking shots), and the unusual point of view shots, like for example, when Emil, Danielle's husband, talks to the journalist, and speaks directly to the camera (that was a great scene).
The visual effects (mostly consisting of the nightmare the journalist has when she's drugged and hypnotized,as Emil is trying to make Danielle remember what truly happened) were really good for that era.
The acting at the beginning felt awful (when the two meet and get together), but it got better. I keep on thinking, maybe the actors were told to act like that, as they looked awkward and uncomfortable.
The soundtrack at times matched, but I mostly didn't like it, as it was loud and obnoxious.
