Sleeping with the enemy
Year of release : 1991
Run time : 1h38m
Genre : Psychological Thriller / Crime
Cast : Julia Roberts
The movie is based on the 1987 Nancy Price novel of the same name.
Laura seems to be living the perfect life with her rich husband, Martin,in a glass house overlooking the ocean,in Cape Cod. Things are not what they seem, as the man is very jealous and possessive, and at the most innocent remark one makes about her, he goes into a fit of rage after, snapping at her.
Also, Laura's likes and dislikes, fears and worries are not important to him, as Martin knows Laura is afraid of water (as she almost dr0wned when she was a kid!), but still makes her go sailing, at least once a season.
He likes everything to be in perfect order (including the towels on the rods, and the groceries in the cabinets ), and when they are not, he takes Laura to the place which is not perfectly arranged to correct the problem,as if she's a child.
After b3ating her up for the remarks a doctor he just met made about her and the house, Martin tells her they're going sailing that evening.
Luckily for her, there's a storm, and Laura plans her escape. When the men aren't paying attention to her, trying to stir the boat, Laura disappears, and they think she drowned.
She has the stupid idea of cutting her hair and throwing her wedding ring in the toilet (why would you do that, if you stage your own death?!)
Laura moves to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to be closer to her blind mother. She takes a fake name, Sarah Waters.
She makes a male friend, who finds her a job, and learns to trust men again.
I personally enjoyed the movie, it has a good vibe.
One thing that bothered me was that it felt Laura moved on too quickly after what she's been through. I don't think that a woman in her condition would have trusted another man so fast and that easily. I think she would have been afraid of men, especially since she knew Martin was great until after their honeymoon.
Another is that the action of the movie takes place within a few months I think, although we see Martin walking around a place with blossomed trees, meaning it's spring, April-May, maybe, but then, I think, Laura is at a 4th of July celebration, not to mention, she's always in short sleeves.
The beautiful community Laura lives in gives me the vibe of endless summer or end of summer. The houses are so beautiful, inside and out!
I liked Julia Roberts' outfits and the places they filmed at.
The acting was good. Julia was the best, as she has to act scared and cry.
The soundtrack was so and so, I liked the songs chosen for the movie, like "Runaway Sue" and "Close to you".
The movie received negative reviews from critics, but grossed 175 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 19 million.
The movie had the highest grossing USA opening with a female lead at the time, grossing 13 million dollars in its opening weekend, surpassing the record set by Aliens with Sigourney Weaver, with 10 million.
Cinema Score audiences graded the movie an A-.
The movie was nominated for a few awards, and won the 1992 BMI Film Music Award for the soundtrack!
In February 2019 it was announced that a remake is in the works.
