The animation is based on the German fairy tale, Snow White, first written down in early 19th century,and published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812.
Snow White lost her parents at an young age, and is now living with the wicked queen,feared among the land, for she's known for dwelling in black magic.
Fearing her beauty (eye roll), the wicked queen, dressed Snow in rags, and had her working as a scullery maid (in great houses, they are the lowest ranked, and youngest of the female aids ,being an assistant to the kitchen maid ), asking her Mirror daily about who's the fairest in the land .
On the day our story begins, Snow meets and falls in love with the prince, who overhears her singing, and falls for her.
The very same day, for the first time, the Magic Mirror tells the queen Snow is the fairest now!
Mad with jealousy, the queen asks the huntsman to k1ll her and bring her her heart as proof.
The huntsman takes her deep in the forest,as per the queen's instructions, to pick wildflowers, but doesn't have the heart to k1ll her, so he tells her to run away, k1lling a pig, and offering its heart to the queen.
Snow White runs scared of the forest's dark places, and after a moment of coming to her senses, is taken to the dwarfs' house, where she cleans the place and cooks (helped by her friends,the animals and birds), hoping they'll let her stay.
The dwarfs come home, and find.. the house cleaned and the pot with soup on the fire place. So they try to find out, scared, who is in their home.
At the same time, the queen finds out from her Magic Mirror Snow White isn't dead, so she decides to take matters in her own hands, relating on black magic!
The movie is a light-hearted animation for the little ones, in which kindness and beauty prevail.
The voice acting was great, and I even enjoyed the songs,as I don't like musicals!
The soundtrack was good.
The animation was inspired by the Germanic look, incorporating European illustrations and paintings techniques. The movie was the first feature length film produced using cel animation (a celluloid (cel) being a transparent sheet used in hand-drawn animation) !
The movie was an international success, earning 8 million dollars worldwide,against a budget of 1,5 million dollars, being the highest grossing movie of 1938, and the highest grossing animation for 55 years!
The animation was nominated for the Best Musical Score at the Oscars in 1938,and the next year, Walt Disney was awarded an honorary Oscar for the movie, consisting of one normal sized Oscar and 7 miniature statues.
In 1989 the US Library of Congress selected the animation as one of the first 25 movies for preservation in the National Film Registry!
