Sputnik means 'companion','travelling companion','fellow traveller' as the satellite accompanies the earth.

The movie takes place in 1983,and opens with two astronauts returning to earth as they encounter an unknown entity outside their space shuttle.

Fast forward to a young psychiatrist who is summoned to a secret research facility to examine the living astronaut.

She thinks he has post traumatic stress,so,at night, her superior takes her to the astronaut's designated resting place.

That's when she sees how,at night, during a certain period, this alien creature comes out of him, growing in size,to go back into his body hours later, after it fed.

The alien also seems to see through the one side glass window, and to feed on cortisol. Although the astronaut says he doesn't remember anything, the alien seems to be connected to him, as whatever the astronaut is attached to, the alien cares for too. Also, the alien makes him healthier and stronger, being in perfect symbiosis.

The psychiatrist is trying to find a way to get the alien out of the astronaut, the commanding officer wants to use the alien as a weapon, while the doctor (the research director of the institute they keep the astronaut at) who treated him until Tatiana (the psychiatrist) arrived, wants a Nobel prize.

I personally enjoyed the movie (I dare say it's one of my favorites), what I didn't like was that it has the story of a kid inserted in it, and at the end it's revealed it's not who we think it is (the son of the astronaut), but the psychiatrist. These past scenes to me are just filler scenes, they don't contribute to the story (as they don't even mention what happened to her when she was a kid), maybe only to show us her resilience.

The movie has amazing visuals, a great soundtrack, and great performances. The movie really felt like a Hollywood blockbuster, not a foreign one.
