The movie was directed, produced and co-written by Gareth Edwards, based on a story he conceived.
The movie opens with exposition, letting us know humanity created AI which turned against them, detonating a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, k1lling everyone. Due to this, the US government and the Western world declares war on AI, and the people of New Asia, who continue to create AI. The Western world have created a space station called Nomad (which looks like a giant bird of prey eyeing the horizon), which upon discovering AI blows it up. All this, to prevent human extinction.
In 2065 the US military is trying to k1ll Nirmata, the creator of New Asia's AI. Our lead, Joshua Taylor, who works undercover for the US military, lives in New Asia with his pregnant wife, Maya.
Their house is raided by the US military, and Maya runs away as Joshua runs after her. Nomad targets the boats around hers and blows them up.
5 years later, Joshua is part of the Ground Zero clean up crew, and has routine check ups, where they try to see what he remembers, and if he tells the truth about it.
He is recruited on a mission against Alpha O, a weapon created by Nirmata to destroy Nomad.
Upon hearing Maya is alive, Joshua agrees, trying to find her.
Back in New Asia, Joshua and his team infiltrates a compound, and discovers Alpha is a child simulant ( I honestly thought it was a boy,but turns out it's a girl) with the ability to control technology.
Joshua's only goal is to find his wife, and everything he does is to get to her. On his journey he finds new things about her, their child and the simulant. His beliefs are shattered and his allegiance turns from his team to Maya's people and creed.
I personally liked the movie, I liked the fact it had heart, which is something Hollywood movies lack today. The movie is pretty much the story of a man looking for his wife, and how the love for her changes his beliefs,to the point his love for her makes him continue her legacy.
The whole movie he is being guided by his love for her, his memories of her always being in the background like the soundtrack to his life.
I liked how the simulants worshiped their creator who lived in Heaven, which was atop of the mountains, "in the sky", having similar beliefs as people who worship their creator who lives in Heaven, which is in the sky.
One thing I didn't understand was why create so many simulants, just to play the role of Tibetan monks, children, girlfriends,etc.. just to crowd the number of the population. It also looked like they infiltrated the olympics, and I don't know how is that fair, a robot competing with humans, since robots are much faster ( I guess it's fair in the same way tr@ns wom3n competing against women, is)!
I personally didn't agree with his decision to switch sides, and so what he did in the end,as that would lead to human extinction, if another "human error" will infiltrate the AI.
I would have liked it if they made peace, and agreed to leave each other and their beliefs alone.
SPOILER I did like the fact he got to see his wife in the end, even if it wasn't really her, but how I see it is, he got to meet her in Heaven ( since they were on Nomad), and reunite in the end.
Another thing I see in movies lately is this rhetoric for AI, while people forget that with AI they will become dumber, as they depend on it, and won't be able to do anything on their own, starting with cooking, and finishing with healing people ( if anything happens with AI, people won't be able to take care of themselves or heal each other because there won't be any human doctors, cooks,etc.. )
For years I see people on the street, on buses,etc.. with their eyes in the phones while they have their significant other or friends right next to them. I think technology alienated people.
Nirmata ,which is Nepalese meaning "the creator", is the mysterious being who created AI, and is the being worshiped by AI.
The movie is segmented in chapters after the long introduction : The Child, The Friend, The Mother.
The movie's first title was "True Love", and utilized 'guerrilla filmmaking' methods due to the budget which otherwise would have gone to 300 million dollars.
The movie grossed 104.3 million dollars against a budget of 80 million.
The visual effects were great.
The acting was good.
The soundtrack, by Hans Zimmer, was good.
