Colt Seavers is a stunt man who loves his job. He is in love with the camera woman of the movies he's working on, and they have a good relationship. Until, he breaks his back after redoing a fall as a stunt man for a major actor.
A year and a half later, he is alone, and works as a valet. He refused to see his girlfriend,as he felt he had nothing to offer.
Now, he is asked back into the business by the producer of Universal, who is also the manager of the major actor who's stunt double he's been for 6 years. The producer lies to him his ex girlfriend asked for him personally,as she is finally directing an alien movie .
Once he gets there he sees that's not the case.
Once in Australia, he is asked by the producer to find the famous actor as he's been on a bender, and involved with drug lords. She doesn't want the police involved.
Trying to find the actor and what's going on, Colt is drugged, shot at, beaten, and still managed to get on top, as as a stuntman, he always lands on his feet, sort to speak.
As he gets too close to finding the truth, and to the woman he loves, he finds out things aren't as they seem, and he might be used as a pawn in the producer's -and not only- game.
The title of the movie has a double meaning,as in, he is a stunt double, but also - SPOILER - he's the scapegoat (that was a nice touch). After the reveal the movie picks up, and really got me interested,as until then I was wondering why does he have to do all this,as it was not his job,and it didn't make any sense (and it kinda bored me).
In the movie Colt says stuntmen don't get recognition, but it's not true, they have the Taurus World Stunt Awards (I know this since 2004,when Keanu Reeves was invited), I checked, and it's still a thing.
Fun fact, and not really related to the movie, per se, but the Los Angeles movie premiere had a good PR,as they had stunt men doing stunts on the red carpet and in the theatre, which was pretty awesome.
The actors were at their best. They were nice to look at,but as in, I felt for them. Ryan Gosling has a few scenes in which he cries, and I really felt bad for the guy. It's hard not to feel bad for the characters, when you understand what it means to be a stunt double. They wound themselves so the movie would look real. They put their lives in danger, knowing they could end up in a wheel chair or dead after a stunt. I could never do such a thing. I can't even understand the courage behind their mentality. They are daredevils.
Jason Momoa has a sort of cameo at the end.
I liked the action scenes, especially the ones with the dog who responded to commands in French. I also liked it when the stunt performers team band together with the director to help Colt.
But.. at the beginning of the movie we're told Colt's career ended when he broke his back, but then he keeps on putting his life in danger,he keeps on falling, gets hit by cars, gets hit against a rock so many times (by his upset ex -on the set of the movie-who knows about his back problem)-I kept on thinking-what about his back,he's gonna break it again- and he is fine.
There's a scene in which he is fighting the actor's girlfriend, the woman has a sword which cuts through metal, but then they say it was a prop..what?!
The actor k!lls his stunt double in front of many people at a party..what about them? They were confused about who did it,they thought it was the stunt double who broke his back a year and a half before, and was on the other side of the world when it happened?
The soundtrack was good, 'I was made for loving you' by Kiss permeates the movie , and it even has a cover made for it.
The visual effects were good, just like the action scenes, the colors just pop, it felt like a summer movie .
The movie is out in cinemas across the world.
Rating : Worth a watch !
