The movie is based on the metaphysical thriller book "The man who was Thursday : A nightmare",published in 1908 ,by G.K.Chesterton.
Father Smith is leading a pretty boring life. He lives each day on repeat, drinks a lot, smokes and occasionally m@sturbates. One would say he doesn't really believes what he preaches. He finds himself say to one of his priest friends he is ready to be tested by God. Careful what you wish for!
After the woman who was taking care of his parish dies,he encounters a femme fatale, who charms him. The woman comes every now and again to confess her sins to him,and one night they have s3x,after a few men came looking for her to k!ll her for owing them 20.000 dollars.
A while later, the woman tells him she's pregnant.
Father Smith tells her he'll give up his priesthood,as he wasn't good at it anyway. He gives her the money to pay the men,and leaves the safe opened.
The woman slips him a pill, and he wakes up after she and her men stole all of his money. He finds a note in which she wrote to him to burn down the church to save himself.
The priest in charge of his seat in Rome, tells him he thinks he has friends in high places for he shouldn't have been forgiven for what he's done.
One of his superiors, Charles, from Vatican Intelligence, who believes in him, tells him if it wasn't for Mussolini, who made Vatican a state within a state,he'll be rotting in jail for aggravated arson, a hate crime, and tasks him with infiltrating a terrorist organization who is after the church,as they want to abolish God.
He keeps on having these dreams which turn out to be premonitions. He keeps on slipping from the present into the past, and one ,like me,is wondering if he's dead or something.
The organization has members with names based on the days of the week. Saturday, who is in charge, and who looks exactly like the woman he fell for, tells him the boss is Sunday, but he is forever absent. She tells him God is absent too, that doesn't mean he doesn't exist, when he questions Sunday's existence.
The movie is pretty boring, and almost put me to sleep, but the ending is worth all the money.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON
The woman is Satan and is testing him, the wager being, find a soul in desperation, one soul lost meaning humanity is lost, one soul saved, the humanity is saved.
The priest is willing to die to save her, although she doesn't deserve his sacrifice, all she's done so far being deceiving him, thus redeeming himself in the eyes of God.
He dies for a character who thinks him a pitiful creature, and who always puts a show in front of him.
She says in the movie God is a myth,so he doesn't exist, but at the end, when God shows up to collect the man's soul, she tells him she didn't think he'd show up in the flesh! Satan is indeed the liar of all liars!
The actors are all good.
