Charlotte lives with her grandmother and mother. Her grandmother has health problems and can't walk properly, while her mother is depressed,and spends her time sleeping.

When Char asks her mother to drive her to school, her mother barely gets out off the bed, and on the way there,she almost drives into a horse,telling Char, as she gets out of the car that she 'can't do this anymore'.

 

In the evening, the mother doesn't come home, and Char and her mother's brother,who lives nearby, go looking for her.

They even call the police, and right after,her mother comes back.

 

Her grandmother thinks there's something wrong with her,and 'accidentally' hits the pot Angela (the mother) was cooking for dinner.

Char doesn't think there's anything wrong with her, and thinks her grams is overreacting.

Just that, she saw her mother putting half of her arm into her throat at night, after she ate potatoes (she didn't want to eat them,but her mother insisted she needs to eat).

After,Angela smashes the lithium she was supposed to take,and puts it in a cup of tea she offers her own brother, putting him into a coma.

 

Angela keeps on trying to get Charlotte to go away on a girls' trip together, and has these strange outbursts.

 

Charlotte has to deal with bullies at school, as she skipped a year,being a brilliant student (I honestly hated the bullying scenes. There's this pyromaniac girl who keeps on calling Angela and Char insane,but doesn't see herself,and it's just terribly annoying. She keeps on trying to burn Charlotte,to the point I'm thinking she should be institutionalized!Charlotte freaks out when her mother picks on the girls, 'cause her mother who saved her is the problem,not the bullies!).

 

This is the 2nd Irish movie I watched (1st one was Oditty), and about Irish lore (this year's The Watchers), and I must admit I like it,the only thing I don't like about it, is I feel it moves too slow, and the pay off at the end is not as good,because, well,they are in a sense ,realistic, as characters I don't want dead, are dying!

 

The movie is called 'You're not my mother' because of a line the daughter says towards the end of the movie, SPOILERS when she burns the creature. It shouldn't have been called like that,first of all,because it's not a good title, second of all,because the whole movie, the girl thinks this is her mother!Her grandmother knows it's not! If anything, it should have been called, 'You are not my daughter'!

 

The visual effects were good!

 

The actors were great! Carolyn Bracken was my favorite!I saw her in Oditty too,and I love her acting.

 

The soundtrack was good.

 

The movie is on Hoopla and Hulu for free, and for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv.

 

Rating : Worth a watch !
