10 things I hate about you
Year of release : 1999
Run time : 1h38m
Genre : Comedy / Romance / Teen
Cast : Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union
The movie is based on Shakespeare's "The taming of the shrew".
Cameron, a new Padua High School student, sees Bianca, and falls for her at first sight. His new best friend, tells him she is shallow, and that she can't date, for her father has these rules for her and her sister, that they can't date.
Kat got into the Sarah Lawrence College, in New York, on the other side of the country, thing which doesn't please her father, who wants her to stay close to home, and go to the University of Washington.
Bianca wants to date the shallow Joey, and sorta, luckily for her, her father comes up with a new rule, when her older sister, Kat, is going to date, she can date also.
When Cameron asks Bianca out, she tells him of her father's rules, so Joey finds a student with a bad reputation who moved in from Australia, Patrick. His friend, Michael, convinces Joey to pay Patrick to date Kat.
Patrick agrees, but Kat is hard to woo, as she keeps on resisting Patrick's "charm".
Cameron and Bianca look for what Kat likes in her room, to make Patrick irresistible in Kat's eyes, and ..it's working.
Problem is, Bianca loses interest in Joey, as he is self absorbed, and Patrick starts to really like Kat.
The movie is definitely aimed at teens, as it has a few vulgar jokes that I did not appreciate, but all in all, it was an Ok movie. I can't say I liked it much. I 'd give it 2 stars..
I liked Kat, I liked that she was real, and she didn't care about anyone's opinion of her. I also liked her father, who was just trying to protect his daughters from teenage unwanted pregnancies, the way he thought best, from keeping them away from boys. Bianca was for the first part of the movie quite shallow, she doesn't seem to know who she wants. She seems put off by Joey after she gets to know him, as he is obsessed with his looks, but at the same time she still goes out with him. Then seems to go for Cameron.
Cameron was nice , I liked how he talked about Bianca. Patrick seems misunderstood, as no one seems to really want to get to know him, and just invent stories about him. The principle was in her own bubble, and didn't get affected by anything around her.
I also liked the architecture.
The soundtrack was good, it has everything for everyone, from rock to pop to hip-hop and dance. A rock band keeps on appearing throughout the movie, but I have no idea who they are.
The title of the movie comes from a poem Kat wrote.
The movie received positive reviews, and grossed 53 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 13 million.
The writers were inspired by movies like Clueless, Patrick being inspired by Judd Nelson's character in "The breakfast club".
Eliza Dushku auditioned for the role of Kat ,and even Katie Holmes was considered. Kate Hudson was offered the role, but her mother didn't like it.
Josh Hartnett and Ashton Kutcher were considered before the role was given to Ledger.
Rating : Worth a watch !
