101 dalmatians
Year of release : 1996
Run time : 1h43m
Genre : Adventure / Crime
Cast : Joely Richardson, Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Hugh Laurie
The movie is based on the 1956 Dodie Smith novel "The 101 dalmatians", and is a remake of the animated movie from 1961.
Roger is a video game designer, who's project (dalmatians chase) is rejected by the kid hired by the company to rate the game, as he says the villain needs to be someone other than a dog catcher, to make kids want to "annihilate" them.
Anita works for The House of DeVil, as a fashion designer, and her boss thinks her to be one of her best employees. When the movie starts, Cruella sees Anita's latest design, inspired by her dog, Perdita, with Dalmatian spots. Cruella loves it.
The very same day, Roger's dalmatian sees Anita's dog, and runs after her for miles, dragging Roger along the bike, in an annoying scene!
Roger ends up in a lake, and meets Anita, after seeing his dog with her, and thinking her dog is his. After they get acquainted, and Roger doesn't seem to be interested in Anita, Anita also ends up in the pond, as her annoying dog runs on her ,dragging her along.
Anita catches a cold, because it's probably winter, considering you can see their breath when they speak outside.
Roger doesn't waste any time, and proposes to Anita that very night, as they camp in together, trying to beat the cold!
Anita says to her nanny she's not ready to have kids yet, and her nanny tells her she knows the female dog, Perdita, is pregnant, because she looks like a mother (eye roll. You can see when a dog is pregnant, because they get a fat belly!)! Right after, Anita finds out she's pregnant too! When she goes to the doctor, Perdita goes to the vet, at the same time, as they are one right next to the other!
When Perdita gives birth, Anita and her nanny stay with her, helping her deliver, counting the puppies, and getting upset one of the 15, died! (My grandparents have a house in the country, they never assisted the dogs when given birth! Neither do my parents now! Make it stop!) Turns out the dog ain't dead, and they name it Lucky!
Cruella is excited to hear Anita has even more Dalmatians, and offers her 7.500 pounds for the puppies. Which her and Roger refuse to sell. Did I mention they are broke?
Cruella doesn't give up, and asks her goons to break in and steal them.
Anita and Roger call the police when their dogs go missing, stating Cruella did it. The police go after Cruella, because that's what happens in real life, when two nobodies complain about a rich powerful person!
The movie personally bored me. It's definitely aimed at children, as it has scenes in which the animals help each other, and work together to bring Cruella down, and you have to suspend your disbelief the whole movie.
The leads are supposed to be likeable, but their dogs annoyed me, and so kinda did them.
They are ridiculously boring, and their mother/nanny is ridiculously happy all the time!
The scene (pretty long one,by the way) in which the dog drags Roger, who's on his bike, for miles and miles, because he saw a female dalmatian, annoyed me. So was the next one, in which the same thing happens to Anita! I think it was meant to be funny, but I didn't find anything funny about ending up thrown off the bike onto a cold dirty lake! They could have been seriously injured; those dogs would have gotten a beating from me!
They were also ridiculous, not wanting to get rid of any dog, at the end having hundreds of dogs, if not thousands! It might sound good in theory, but one must be very rich to take care / feed, so many dogs! Not to mention the mess they make! At the beginning of the movie Roger is broke! Anita isn't doing much better either!
I also don't get the fascination with Dalmations, I liked the fluffy ones!
The only character I liked was Cruella, Glenn Close was amazing, she deserved an Oscar for her performance (she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress)! I loved her style, the interior design of her company, office, and house .
I liked the colors of the movie, and the late autumn- early winter atmosphere and colors.
The acting was good. I didn't quite like Joely's acting, although she's usually great.
The visual effects were good.
I didn't like the soundtrack,it's nothing special, sounds like the old ones, before they got cool.
The movie received mixed to negative reviews, grossing 320.7 million dollars at the box office ,against a budget of 67 million, being the 6th highest grossing movie of the year 1996!
Cinema Score audiences gave the movie an A, on an A+ to F scale!
The movie has a sequel, released in 2000, titled "102 dalmatians" starring Glenn Close, and a few video games .
Rating : Could have been a contender !
