The movie was written and directed by Wes Craven, and is the first in the “A nightmare on Elm street” franchise ( of 6 sequels, merchandise, tv series,a crossover with Friday the 13th, and a remake ).
The movie opens with Fred Krueger creating his signature knives glove. We then see Tina ,running away from him ,and as she wakes up, we realize we were in her nightmare.
Tina tells her friends about the nightmare she had, and asks her best friend, Nancy, to spend the night at her place, as her mother with her boyfriend are away. Nancy comes with her boyfriend, and talking about it, they realize they all have nightmares, and not just that, they all dream about the same man.
Tina’s boyfriend shows up too, although they broke up, as they always fight. They make up, and while she sleeps she enters the nightmare again, from which she can’t wake up. This time the man with the claw k1lls her. The police think it’s the boyfriend who ran away after he witnessed the murd3r.
Nancy’s father is the main detective on the case, and uses Nancy to catch Tina’s boyfriend.
Nancy is now afraid to go to sleep, and whenever she does, the disfigured man in the red and green sweater with the claw hand follows her, trying to k1ll her. She realizes that she can wake up if she hurts herself in the dream, whatever done to her in the dream world appearing in real life too.
When telling her mother about it, she tells her herself and her friends k1lled a man like that, by burning him alive, because he was a ch1ld k1ller.
It seems that now, dead, and with supernatural powers, the k1ller is out for vengeance.
I personally enjoyed the movie, as it didn’t bore me. It had really good special effects, and dream sequences, but the acting took me out of it, as it was really bad.
The acting was bad, especially from the actress playing the alcoholic mother.
The soundtrack wasn’t bad, but I felt it didn’t match what was on the screen.
The special effects were great for 1984, there’s this scene in which Tina is dragged across the wall and on the ceiling!
The movie received critical acclaim and is considered one of the best horror movies ever made. It has a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie grossed a little over 57 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 1.1 million dollars!
