Romy seems to have a perfect life: she still has a beautiful relationship with her husband , still being intimate, and is the CEO of a robotic process automation company in New York.
The day the movie opens, she is almost bitten by an angry dog, which is calmed down by a young man (although the dog is not his).
The same day, Romy discovers the man is one of the interns at her company. Romy seems to be attracted to him, and he tells her he picked her as his mentor.
Although obviously drawn to him, she tells him she didn't sign for such a thing, but he tells her he picked her from the list, and she has to spend 10 minutes with him every Tuesday.
Afraid this might jeopardize her relationship, she refuses, but she still shows up at the meeting, choosing a room with soundproof walls.
The man, Sam, asks her out, and although at first she refuses, she accepts.
They meet in a hotel room, and Romy plays coy again, as she thinks she is taking advantage of him, with him being young and also her intern. Sam tells her he's the one with power over her, as he could destroy her life with one phone call. Romy seems to get off on danger.
They start a torrid affair, based on her being his submissive, but Romy freaks out and breaks up with him when she finds him at home, meeting her family, one day.
Romy can't stay away from him, and tries to get him back, as she never experienced an org@sm with her husband in their 19 years together (maybe also due to the fact she's into BDSM, sort of- as she likes to be told what to do. This might also come from the fact she was raised in a cult, as a child.)
Sam finally gives in, and at a Christmas party, held at Romy's family's place, Sam comes with his co-worker, and her assistant, which annoys Romy, who is jealous, and almost has a fit.
I personally enjoyed the movie. It did not bore me, I wanted to see where this leads...I honestly thought it would destroy not only her career, but her marriage. The movies I watched lately kinda bored me, and I though it was just me, but apparently it wasn't.
One thing that bothered me in the movie, was the feminist assistant, or whatever she was, she really annoyed me whenever she started with "more jobs for women".
Oh, and her gay daughter, with an ugly haircut, who had a girlfriend, but cheated on her ,as she stated she was "having fun".
The movie received positive reviews, and was a box office success, grossing 64.6 million dollars against a 20 million budget. The National Board of Review named it one of the top 10 movies of 2024, giving Nicole Kidman the Best Actress prize.
