Christmas getaway
Year of release : 2017
Run time : 1h24m
Genre : Romance
Emory, a travel writer, cooks a Swedish traditional Christmas meal, which consists of finding the almond in the dish, and whoever does, will get married within a year.
She looks so relieved when seeing she is not the one finding it, and her boyfriend of 6 months sees that.
After dinner, he invites her to spend Christmas with his family, and she refuses, breaking up with him.
Her editor is not surprised, as she knows Emory well.
Scott is a lawyer who wants to spend a quiet Christmas at home.
Emory's editor books her a cabin in Pine Grove, and asks her to write a story about an US traditional Christmas.
Scott's daughter hears her best friend will spend Christmas at a cabin in Pine Grove for Christmas, and she wants the same thing, making a Christmas Wish List. His mother decides to offer this as a Christmas gift for him and his daughter, and books a cabin for them, where she will join them after some friend's birthday.
When Scott and his daughter arrive at the cabin, they find Emory there, and going back to the man who owns the place, finds out they were double booked! After friendly fighting over who should stay and who should go, Emory decides to leave. I personally found it annoying the guy who's mother obviously booked after her, just two days before they got there (I don't even think you can book, especially for Christmas, something at the last moment like that!), kept on talking about how this was their cabin, because he had a kid and she was alone!
Unluckily for her the roads are closed and her car won't start, and she has to stay with them. She decides to sleep on the couch, although there's an empty room.
Emory tries to write the article the next morning, but has no ideas, and seeing the kid's Christmas list, she wants to join, for inspiration.
They start doing things together, like cutting down a tree (do you know it takes a fir tree 25 years to grow, just for people to use it for one or two weeks and then discard it?), and Emory even gives the kid her photo camera! (Literally, the day after they meet! Doesn't she have pictures from her travels on it?Doesn't she need it for her article?)
I personally didn't like it, I didn't quite like the acting, and the plot was so ridiculous, so predictable, and some characters, like our lead, kinda annoyed me. For example, she travels all the time, and doesn't want to settle with the man she's been with for 6 months, but wants to, with the guy she knows for a few days! Eye roll!!!
She cooks the Swedish traditional Christmas meal, knowing she doesn't want to marry her boyfriend! Then cooks it when she literally, just started dating a widower!
I found her obsession with always being in a different place annoying! You'd think it has something to do with her family,as if she's running away from something, but no, she gets along famously with them, although they never spend any time together, not even for Christmas!
Emory sleeps the whole time she lives at the cabin on the couch! The guy could have given her his room, considering she was booked first!
Emory and her friend, editor, always stop in the middle of the street,in front of a building, and talk. When her friend is alone, she always stops in front of some building and talks to her!
The editor always talks about her family, kids, but whenever she talks to Emory she's always alone. Even when she's at home!
When talking to her father on the phone he says her mom says Hi, but she's not around, even when Emory says Hi back! I guess they were short on actors!
At the store where she gets the keys for the cabin the owner tries to look busy, but it just looks fake, again, because there's no one there!
When the widower tries to unlock the door,he finds it's already unlocked, but he doesn't worry, he just gets in with his daughter, without trying to make sure there's no one on the premises! Although he sees the lights are on, so are the Christmas decorations, and the fire in the fireplace is burning!
When Scott's mother looks up Emory, she literally found a picture of her from Comic Con!!! They put a pic of the actress on stage,at the panel, with the mike in front of her!! That's how much they cared!!!
The owner doesn't apologize or try to offer compensation for double booking them! It's just annoying!
They came with Christmas decorations from home!!! Even the mother brings the globes they made for the granddaughter when she was little!!! I hope they won't forget them in the Christmas tree!
They put on the Christmas lights when they are on!
They wrap the Christmas gifts at the cabin! They came with the gifts and the wrappings and all!
The kid and Scott's mother like Emory from the moment they meet her!
I hated that everybody tried to look so happy, and it just looked fake! The kids are happy to see their parents when they pick them up from school, although they live together, so they didn't see each other since morning! It looked like the Stepford wives and awkward.
It's supposed to be December, but all the trees are green, the trees which lose their leaves and turn yellow, brown starting the end of summer!
I did like the atmosphere (although it looked like it was all fake snow), the landscapes, the Christmas decorations.
Some of the songs of the soundtrack sounded Ok, considering in such movies they are so generic. Others sounded Jazzy and I hate that.
I didn't like the acting, especially at the part when Emory finds a man in the cabin. She doesn't look scared (neither does he) although she tries to, but fails, she looks more happy and tries to be funny! The daughter looks like Emory is their old time friend! It just annoyed me! The kid is happy that a stranger will stay with them.
Rating : Could have been a contender!
