Coherence
Year of release : 2013
Run time : 1h28min
Genre : Sci Fi / Thriller
The movie was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit,-from a story that he and his friend, Alex Manugian, who plays Amir in the movie, came up with-,who filmed the movie in his house over a 5 nights period, and had most of the script improvised.
Emily is driving her car to her friends' place for a dinner party with the occasion of the Miller comet passing by earth. While talking on the phone with her boyfriend, who meets her there, her phone screen cracks.
Arriving at her friends' place she tells them what happened to her phone, asking if it could be because of the comet, and they let her know her boyfriend's ex is coming with one of their friends.
The power goes off, and they lit candles. Two of them decide to check if the neighbors have any electricity, as the power seems to be out in the whole neighborhood, only one house being lit in the darkness. They take blue colored glow sticks with them.
When he comes back, Hugh ( SPOILER at the end we realize it's actually not him,the two never come back,it's just different versions of themselves!), who's brother is a scientist and asked him to call if anything strange happens, can't make the call. They find out none of them have phone service,as more phone screens break!
They talk more about the Miller comet which whenever it passed by earth seemed to have seriously affected people;Emily says the last time, it affected people so much, they didn't know who they were anymore or where they were, and didn't recognize their spouses,as a woman said the man in her house was not her husband, as she k1lled him the previous day. (Always pay attention to the dialogue, there's clues in the stories about what's happening to the characters of our movie)
Going out again, although Emily is trying to keep her man in(she goes with them),they see people looking exactly like them,on the other side of the street, with different color glow sticks (red, theirs were blue), and run back inside.
They have an idea of putting things in a box, random objects,to know which house they belong to. They also keep the score,of how many versions of them are,by writing the number on the back of the picture, with a different color marker (another way to tell what house they're in).
SPOILERS The idea is, that whenever someone goes out, walking through the dark space, they never return to the same house. The only ones who still belong to the house, are the ones who never left it.
When she realizes she's in the wrong house, Emily is trying to get back home, but will she be able to find 'her' house, her universe?
This was one of my favorite movies, as it keeps you in suspense, keeps you guessing, interested, intrigued as you want to know what's going on,is it the comet? In my opinion this is a 'little movie that could',meaning it's made with little money, but it's interesting, it's smart,it makes you think, and it makes you think about it after it ended.
The movie grossed 140.000 dollars over a micro budget of 50.000 dollars!
The acting was good.
The soundtrack was good.
