The movie is adapted from the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos " Les liaisons dangereuses"(translation "Dangerous connections"), and a remake of the 1988 movie "Dangerous liaisons".

Sebastian Valmont is a wealthy teenager, who likes to manipulate girls into sleeping with him. The movie opens with him going to his psychiatrist, who is over charging his bill, so he retaliates by seducing her daughter,taking nudes of her and posting them on the internet .

His evil is equaled only by his step sister, who pretends to be good and nice, but secretly hates everyone and plots their social demise. Kathryn is asked by Cecile's mother to take her under her wing, in the new school year, and Kathryn accepts gladly, as she wants to ruin Cecile because the man she wants dates Cecile. So she asks Sebastian to seduce her. Sebastian is more interested in Annette, who wrote an article in Seventeen magazine about how she's going to wait to have sex, although she has a boyfriend for over a year. They place a bet, that if Kathryn wins, Sebastian's Jaguar will be hers, and if he wins, he gets to have sex with Kathryn.

Sebastian visits his aunt, because he heard Annette stays at her place. Annette is unimpressed by his charms, as she says someone warned her about him. Sebastian visits his gay friend, who tells him it's probably Cecile's man,who is gay, and they decide to catch him in the act,when he's visiting him,so they can have something on him.

The man, although friends with Annette, lies to her Sebastian is a catch, and asks her who told her about Sebastian's ways.

Hearing that it was Cecile's mother, Sebastian accepts to seduce Cecile to get back at her mother.

 

Kathryn sees that Cecile is interested in a student who gives her cello lessons, and knowing her mother is racist, tells on her. At the same time, she helps her be with the guy, while telling her to date Sebastian who can teach her how to be good in bed!

Because Annette doesn't fall that easily for his tactics, Sebastian is starting to fall for her.

I personally enjoyed the movie, but is pretty heartless. Our two leads, Sebastian and Kathryn are despicable, as they have no morals and are just evil, preying on everyone.

Annette seems to be her own person, but even she falls too fast for Sebastian, as they don't even go out together, and she is already ready to go back on her principles and give it up to Sebastian .

Cecile is very innocent, but even she has casual s3x with Sebastian.

Cecile's love interest, who "loves" Cecile, is having s3x with Kathryn!

The psychiatrist is over charging Sebastian. Sebastian's gay friend is trapping his gay lover. The gay lover is lying to Annette about Sebastian, so Sebastian could get with her.

Cecile's mother is racist.

There's no good character, honestly.

The actors were flawless.

The soundtrack was so and so, as I liked the songs chosen for the movie, but didn't think the soundtrack per se, matched it.

The movie received mixed reviews, and got a B- from the Cinema Score audiences.

The movie grossed 75.9 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 10.5 million.

The movie has a 2000 prequel, a 2004 sequel, and a 2024 tv series, all titled Cruel Intentions.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe also played together in "I know what you did last summer"(1997). The Seventeen magazine cover Sebastian hands over to Kathryn has their "I know what you did last summer"(1997) co-star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, on the cover.

Swoosie Kurtz,who plays the psychiatrist, also played in the original, Cecile's mother.
