The movie is based on Jane Austen's Emma, originally published in 1815.

After Emma's governess married, her father is disappointed she left them to have her own house and a man to love her. He thinks people should always stay with him, and no one should get married (to remain with him).

Thinking she was the one who brought her governess and her husband together, Emma sets her sights on Harriet, wanting to find her a husband. The young lady already had a suitor, but Emma doesn't think  him good enough for her, as he is a farmer. She tells Harriet to set her sights on vicar Elton, although Elton seems more interested in Emma.

After a Christmas party, Elton confesses his feelings towards Emma, and Emma refuses him. From then on, Elton, although a vicar, shows his true colors, which aren't that bright, and finds a wife to match.

Emma has a good friend in Mr. Knightly who likes to tease her about their age gap (considering he was her love interest, and 16 older than her, I didn't like him bringing up how he used to hold her when she was a baby.Eww!)

Miss Bates introduces Emma to Jane Fairfax, who keeps to herself, thing Emma dislikes.

Frank Churchill makes an appearance, and he seems drawn to Emma. At the same time, Jane Fairfax seems sadder and sadder.

The movie had more information than the other 1996 Emma, with Gwyneth Paltrow, and we see that Frank Churchill was a bit of a j3rk, playing with girls' feelings. If Emma would have had feelings for him, the way he acted towards her, would have really led her on.

Jane Fairfax is better drawn in this one too. So is Emma's father, who is very self centered, always worries about catching a cold, the draft, and being left alone,by anyone! He's like an old baby!

I didn't care for the soundtrack, and we even have moments when the leads like Kate Beckinsale and Olivia Williams sing. If that was Olivia's voice, I think she might be a soprano.

The actors were great, I thought Kate Beckinsale, Samantha Morton and Olivia Williams, Bernard Hepton, who played her father, and Prunella Scales, who played Miss Bates, were the best .
