Wealthy New Yorkers Brad and Caroline Sexton pretend everything is perfect as they celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Once home, everything changes. They sleep in separate rooms and fight all the time,Caroline always asking for a divorce.
As if that's not enough, their accountant embezzled millions of their money and made it look like they did it. Now the IRS is looking for them to take them to jail.
In a desperate chase, the pair, who by chance, end up in the same taxi, drive outside the city and land in a pond. Near the pond there's a completely different world,an Amish world.
Brad convinces his wife to pretend they're the estranged cousins of an Amish family,as they hide from the IRS while their lawyer finds their accountant to bring him to justice.
During their stay there,as they learn to work the land ( Brad),and do household chores( Caroline), they learn to appreciate the little things and remember why they fell in love with each other.
This is one of my favorite movies,I watched it many times, and it always makes me laugh with tears!
The places where they shot the movie were beautiful, in New York with beautiful architecture, in the country, picturesque.
The characters have growth, for example, Caroline hates it in the country first, as they wake up early (4:45 in the morning), and have to work all day ( the women cook all day, clean the house and sew),while the men work the land, but she learns to enjoy it, and love the people who offered them shelter, and the little girl who took a shine to her, following her everywhere. She even admits she feels useless as she doesn't know how to do anything, unlike the Amish women .
For Brad it was easier, as he's more practical.
They even help the Amish community, as Brad helps the men get a good deal on a house they wanted to buy, and Caroline helps the women get the Elders to agree for the community to wear colors.
The actors are all great, giving their best.
The soundtrack had its good moments and bad moments.
The movie received mostly negative reviews, and was a box office flop, making 32.7 million dollars against a 35 million dollar budget. 16 million of the 35 million budget was Tim Allen's paycheck.
