Guy lives in Free City,where people who wear sun glasses are cool and get to do everything they want. He works at the bank which is constantly robbed,yet he thinks he lives in paradise,although,the city is constantly destroyed by people who fight.

 

Guy is always wearing the same outfit,like a uniform,each morning drinks coffee with cream and 2 sugars, and likes vintage Mariah. He is obsessed with a pair of sneakers he doesn't have the money to buy,and tells everyone "Don't have a good day,have a great day!". He is also thinking about a girl he never met.

He gets to meet her on the street one day,hearing the song she listens to, Mariah's Fantasy. Following her,he gets hit by a train.

 

The next morning,Guy wakes up in his bed,like nothing happened. But,when ordering coffee,he wants a cappuccino. Then changes his mind,as everyone is starring at him.

His bank is being robbed again,and it seems Guy had enough. He sees the girl on the street,and decides to flip the game on the robber,getting his sun glasses,and gun.

Putting the sun glasses on,he sees a whole new world,things which don't exist without them on.

Robbing the robber,he gets money into his account,and gets to buy the sneakers he's been obsessed with.

 

In the real world, the people who work on developing the video game,see a non playable character is acting out,so they enter the game to take him out,thinking he is a hacker.

 

Millie enters the game all the time,in order to find the old code she put into the video game Free City,as it was stolen by Antwan.

She visits her old partner,whom she developed the game with,to ask him to help her prove Antwan stole their video game.

 

The next morning,when he wakes up, Guy puts on a different blue shirt,and finds Millie. She tells him in order to play,he needs a higher level,and needs to car jack,rob,in order to get points. He doesn't want to hurt people,so he fights the bad guys,the ones who are always wrecking the city,killing the NPC characters.

 

He gets famous in the real world,as people think this is another player. Guy levels up to 100+ in order to meet Millie again.

 

Guy appears in the mansion she is robbing,as she thinks it has the old code,and helps her escape. So they end up going on a date. Turns out they have a lot of things in common,like,they both like vintage Mariah,swings and ice cream bubble gum. It's like she made him in the computer.

 

Millie's former partner finds out Guy is evolving AI ,and although at first,Antwan likes Guy, he changes his mind,and asks his employees to destroy him.

 

Rebooting the game, Guy goes back to his former self,and Millie finds him,telling him the truth about his world,as Antwan,in order to hide the old code,decided to destroy the Free City game and replace it with its sequel.

Will Guy remember who he is,and help save his world?

 

I really enjoyed the movie,especially the first part. It was funny,entertaining,didn't miss a beat.

 

The actors were great,especially Ryan Reynolds.

 

Apparently Hugh Jackman played the masked man who meets Millie in her first scene,and Chris Evans has a cameo.

Minus points : I'm so sick of hearing about patriarchy,white privilege and all the rest,in movies which have nothing to do with it,so it will score points with the woke mob!

Also, I thought she'd create him a girl based on her,since he was hopelessly in love with her,but that didn't happen.

 

The visual effects were great.

 

The soundtrack was good.

 

Free Guy is streaming on Disney+, and is for rent / sale on Amazon, Apple iTunes, Google Play, Vudu.
