The movie is adapted from the 'Ghost in the shell' manga series, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow .

In the near future, humans are upgraded with cybernetic 'improvements' ranging from vision to strength to intelligence.

Hanka Robotics, create a secret project to develop an android which can hold a human brain, merging man and machine. The sole survivor of a terrorist attack,Mira Killian,is the test subject which not only survives this merge, but is used as a counter terrorist operative.

A year later, Mira reached Major status in the counter terrorist bureau, Section 9 .She injects herself at the back of her head,so her brain won't reject her body, and won't experience hallucinations.

After she destroys an android geisha who wouldn't release a hostage,Mira finds out the geisha was hacked into by an unknown entity known as Kuze.

Wanting to get to the bottom of things,Mira deep dives into the geisha's consciousness to learn more about what happened. The entity launches a counter-hack,but she's pulled out at the last moment.

She and her partner,Batou, track the entity at a nightclub, where,in an explosion, Batou loses his eyes, and Mira is seriously wounded, having to have her body reconstructed.

Kuze kills a member of doctor Ouelet's team, and the investigation shows that they worked together on a project, whose participants are all dead, the last one alive being doctor Ouelet.

I don't know if the movie is inspired by the whole book series,as I only watched the 1995 anime, and the movie doesn't have much of it. It kept some characters, who looked the same, for example, Pilou Asbaek looked exactly like Batou in the anime.

The movie merged two characters into one,and kept some scenes from the 1995 anime, including the one with the plane flying above the buildings.

The actors were all fine.

I loved the visual effects. I loved the scenes of her in other people's minds. I loved the fighting scenes.

I loved the soundtrack. At the end of the movie they play the song from the 1995 anime, the one played when they make the cyborg, with the choirs.

The movie is streaming on Hoopla, and is for rent / sale on Amazon Video, DirecTv, Google Play Movies, Redbox, Vudu, YouTube.

Rating : Worth a watch !
