The movie is based on the Brothers Grimm's 1812 famous fairy tale,"Hansel and Gretel".
The movie opens with the story of the witch, told by the witch herself. It then goes to the story of Gretel,who narrates about the beautiful girl in the pink cap aka the witch.
She and her brother go to a wealthy man looking for work, but offended by the man who asks her about her maidenhood, leaves.
Their mother seems insane,as she wants them gone, saying it's not enough room in their big house,and tries to kill them with the axe.
After many days of walking through the woods,without eating anything,they see mushrooms and eat them, and they get high.
And then find this strange looking house, built more like today's houses than the 1800's. They look through the window as it smells like cake, and Hansel can't help himself, so he goes in through the window, eating the delicacies placed on the table.
This strange looking woman appears,with fingers darken to the middle, who offers to give them shelter. She takes a piece of hair from Hansel's head,smelling it,saying how she tries to make sure they are clean.
Hansel loves it there, but Gretel doesn't trust the old woman, as she always has a lot of food on the table,many delicacies, but there's no animals or birds around,not even trees or bushes with fruits,not to mention it seems to be late in autumn.
The woman takes a liking to Gretel and wants to teach her her craft,witchcraft,while she has other plans with Hansel.
The movie was pretty dark,and I noticed what some other reviewer said, that Hollywood movies are getting darker and darker. I didn't like the ending, as SPOILER Gretel leaves her brother who is a kid, as he needs to find his own way,because she's a witch now!
I didn't like the fact Gretel had a boy haircut. If it wasn't for her name and what other characters said about her, I would have taken her for a boy.
The leading characters have this thing they do,they snort like pigs, thing which annoyed me the whole movie.
The acting was good.
I loved the soundtrack.
