Jane and John Smith are a couple married for 5 years according to the husband,6 according to the wife,who live a boring life. They spend their days going to their jobs ,having dinner at 7,occasionally going to neighbors' parties,pretty much sleeping one next to the other like an old couple, having things in the house that the other one hates..and so on. One could say that after 5-6 years of marriage,the spark is gone. They even go to a therapist to save their marriage.
Or so it seems.
Slowly but surely,we see what their jobs are about. Jane who told everyone,including her husband,she works in IT, is a top spy,and John,who told everyone ,including his wife,he works in construction,as a big time contractor, is also a top spy,both working for competing agencies.
They find out about each other as they are both hired to kill the same target.
They both start thinking they were each other's mark. John is trying to find out if it was real love or he was just a mark to her,while Jane is sure she was just a mark and is trying to kill him.
The movie started well, but then it started to lose me. This was the first time I watched it and didn't hate it, as I watched it twice before and disliked it. Although it's the type of movie I enjoy,don't know why. Maybe because it feels repetitive, they keep on trying to k1ll each other, mostly her, again, and again, and again!
I still found Jane annoying and unlikeable, as she was always treating John like a kid,and always did what she wanted,like for example,he didn't want a certain kind of food - she'll say,you'll have some regardless; she bought new ugly curtains,he said he didn't like them,she decided to keep them and redecorate the whole house around them . When she found out he was a spy,she immediately decided he married her knowing who she was,and tried to kill him,quite a few times,twice thinking she succeeded (and didn't cry much about it). She never stopped to think,I love this man,let me find out what he is about,although,at the beginning she says to her friend " I never do anything without thinking it through".
John on the other hand,is trying to figure out if she loves him or not,if she married him knowing who he really was,and if the marriage was a hoax. He's the one who is trying to work things out,trying to save his marriage. Which is surprising,considering at the beginning of the movie,it feels their marriage is close to a divorce,as they are bickering like an old couple who had enough of each other.
I don't think she deserved a second chance.
The acting is good, Vince Vaughn is the comic relief and he is pretty funny,the movie is action packed,and has pretty cool action scenes for the action lovers.
Michelle Monaghan makes a cameo appearance as the computer tech.
The soundtrack in the first half of the movie to me was bad, but then it started getting better. Every once in a while I really liked how it sounded.
The movie received mixed reviews, Cinema Score audiences grading the movie a B+.
The movie grossed 487.3 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 110 million, being the 7th grossing movie of 2005.
Although Jolie and Pitt were interested in doing a sequel, the writers had nothing in mind, although, ironically, in 2007 the writer and director shot a pilot for a tv series with Jordana Brewster and Martin Henderson,set 6 months after the action of the movie takes place.
The movie has a sort of tv series remake, released in 2024, with the same title.
Nicole Kidman was supposed to play Jane, but she had scheduling conflicts with "The Stepford wives". That made Pitt leave the project too, making the director Doug Liman think of pairings like Will Smith and Catherine Zeta Jones, Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett, until Angelina signed, which made Pitt return to the project.
