Nope
Year of release : 2022
Run time : 2h11m
Genre : Horror / Sci Fi
The movie was written, produced and directed by Jordan Peele.
The movie opens with the ranch of the Haywood family who trains horses and handles them for film productions.
As the father and son talk, something falls from the sky, revealed later to be coins, k1lling the father, going through his skull like a bullet!
6 months later, OJ, the son, is on a movie set handling one of their horses, just that, he lacks charisma and interest in working on set and selling his product. His sister comes and saves the day, as she is his opposite, full of life, always knowing the right words to say. Problem is, the horse gets scared of a chrome ball put right in front of its eyes, seeing its own reflection, and kicks the person behind it.
OJ confesses to his sister he's been selling the horses to a man who has an amusement park, for money.
The man in question, Jupe, used to be a child actor, who used to play in a sitcom called, Gordy's Home, back in 1998, when on set one day a balloon popped and scared one of the chimpanzees who were playing Gordy, making it react violently, k1lling everyone on set, stopping when seeing a terrified Jupe.
One night, at the ranch, the siblings see the lights go out , and realize a UFO is the one stealing their horses.
They decide to install cameras around the property, and take pictures of the UFO to sell it to the highest bidder for fame and money.
They are helped by an electronics store employee, Angel, to install the cameras, although at first they refused, and Angel becomes interested in what they need it for, starting to check in on their feed, without their knowledge or approval. Which turns out to be a good thing, as he's the one saving their lives when the object approaches their house.
After a failed attempt to get a movie director interested in their UFO, they find out Jupe was offering the horses he bought from them to the alien, trying to domesticate it and use it on his show!
The movie is a slow burn, not much happens for the first half an hour. It feels all this is a test for the characters who want fame and money (except for OJ, who just needs money to survive), and some of them pass it, others fail.
Based on the quote which opens the movie, the alien might not be an alien, but one of the angels of the Bible, as if you look up into how they look, they don't look like us. I think it might be some sort of punishment for whatever the characters did, like for example, Jupe didn't learn anything from the violent reaction the chimpanzee had to the sound of a balloon popping, and now he put in danger the lives of the people who came to watch his show.
OJ figures out the "alien" is like a wild animal, it reacts violently when you look at it, and doesn't look at it (telling others not to look at it either), until he is trying to save his sister (SPOILER and the "alien" leaves him be! for the act of courage and altruism).
Pretty much everyone in the movie wants to be famous or to film/ take a picture of something which will make them famous. There's a reporter who, after being thrown off his electric bike, although he is unable to move, he keeps on telling OJ to take a picture of the "alien'', which is a reflection of the world today, who is obsessed with fame and getting the money shot.
The movie is called Nope because the characters say that a lot. Jordan Peele actually got his inspiration for the creature from the water world!
The video effects were good.
The actors were good. The siblings are polar opposites, while OJ seems sad, mellow, lacking energy, his sister is full of life and upbeat. It feels when you see them in a room ,that he sucks the energy out of it, while she fills it up with energy.
The soundtrack was good ,when it kicks in, as for the most part the movie is built like a drama, being silent.
The movie received positive reviews, and grossed 171 million dollars worldwide ,against a budget of 68 million.
Cinema Score audiences gave the movie a B, on an A+ to F scale.
