The movie opens with what is apparently a happy couple, shopping. The wife is looking at clocks and decides to buy one for her husband (I didn't know people bought clocks for their significant others! I personally don't find it such a good gift!).While in the shop, she meets a former flame, and decides to buy him a clock too,and not just that,to go to his hotel room (as he conveniently forgot his keys right next to her hand), and put the gift inside a drawer.
After what seems to be a dream about her having s3x with her former flame in a park, while her husband sees her,she decides to go,at 3 o'clock in the morning, to her flame's hotel room,as she realizes she gave him her husband's gift.
Soon we come to realize, her husband is not stable, and he is going around town taking women's babies for some experiment he and his father are planning.
And the wife's dream wasn't a dream, the husband did see her getting busy with her flame, and is plotting his revenge.
The movie is -for those who watched Brian de Palma movies- in the known style of the director, the cheating woman, more or less,or the woman with a guilty conscience ,and the repercussions of her actions. The movie reminded me a bit of Brian de Palma's 1980's 'Dressed to kill',as it had a lot of similarities.
The movie is good and entertaining, dealing with the human psyche.
The title comes from a bestseller book the husband's father wrote about split personality.
The actors were all good, especially John Lithgow, who played a man with a split personality, and he had quite a few. This is the 3d movie he and Brian de Palma worked on together, after 1976 Obsession, and 1981 Blow Out.
The soundtrack reminded me of old Alfred Hitchcock movies.
The movie, written and directed by De Palma, grossed 37 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 12 million.
The movie received mixed to positive reviews, the critics praising John Lithgow's performance.
The movie is for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv, Fandango at Home.
Rating : Worth a watch!
