Robocop
Year of release : 1987
Run time : 1h43m
Genre : Sci Fi / Action
Cast : Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ray Wise
The movie was conceived by Edward Neumeier when he worked on the movie Blade Runner (1982) and then wrote it with Michael Miner.
The movie starts by introducing us to the world of the movie through the News on tv.
In a dystopian future, Detroit is on the brink of social and financial collapse. Due to the crime rate the Police Department is controlled by a mega corporation Omni Consumer Products. The senior president of the corporation presents his toy, which k1lls an innocent man due to how poorly made it is.
The junior executive uses this chance to tell the chairman about his project, half robot, half cop, Robocop. This doesn't sit well with the senior president.
Police officer Murphy, is transferred to the Metro West precinct. He and his partner pursue a notorious criminal and his gang, after they robbed a bank. They chase them to an abandoned factory, where they t0rture sh00t him until they k1ll him.
Although there's not much left of him, his body is given to Omni, where the junior executive and his team turn him into a RoboCop.
RoboCop is assigned to Metro West, where he solves crime, and everybody loves him. His former partner recognizes the move he made with his gun, and thinks it's Murphy.
While on stand-by, Murphy, now RoboCop, even has flashes of his human life, and the men who k1lled him. Going on patrol, after his former partner called him Murphy, he almost catches one of the bad guys, who somehow recognizes him, although he has a mask on his face,so you can only see the lips with the jaw line.
He goes through the Police database, and recognizes this man's associates, triggering his memories not only of the murder, but also of his family.
Trying to bring the bad guys to justice RoboCop becomes the hunted and the pariah, as the villains are protected by people in power with their own agendas.
The movie personally bored me, I didn't see why people love it so much.
The movie doesn't waste any time to introduce the characters, we meet the lead, he tells his partner he has a family, and that's it, we never see them. I felt we didn't know anything about the leads, so why should we care for them? We don't know if they're good or bad.
I felt the movie lacked heart, as it's just action, murd3r sprees, almost catching the bad guys (I hate it when they do that) and then bringing the bad guys to justice.
Whenever I watch old movies I'm always astonished of the technological developments (and other things they thought we could achieve) they thought we'd have about now, which we still don't!
I do like the futuristic houses they used to build back then. Murphy's house was nice.
Although I liked being introduced to the world of the movie through the News, at the beginning, that happens a lot through the movie, and became annoying.
The visual effects were great for that era! The RoboCop costume, the police officers machines, the bad guy melting..
The soundtrack was good, I liked it when it sounded like a symphony.
At times I didn't like the acting, other times I did. The villains were the best, although the characters were cartoon villains, who just liked to do evil for the sake of being evil. Peter Weller, although didn't impress me as a human cop,was great as the RoboCop.
The movie was a blockbuster, as it earned 53.4 million dollars against a budget of 13.7 million, and even won an Oscar!
RoboCop was offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Rutger Hauer, among others, but Peter Weller was the only one who wanted to play him! Michael Ironside was offered to play the villain but he refused, as he didn't want to play another psychopath.
Robocop is on Max, Max Amazon Channel with subscription; 7 days free on Cinemax on Amazon Channels, Cinemax on AppleTv Channels; and is for rent / sale on Amazon Video, AppleTv, Fandango at Home.
Rating : Could have been a contender !
