The devil wears Prada

Year of release : 2006

Run time : 1h49m

Genre : Comedy / Drama

Cast : Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Adrian Grenier, Simon Baker

The movie is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger.

Andrea Sachs just graduated from Northwestern University, and moved to New York with her boyfriend, looking for a job, as she wants to be a journalist. She gets an interview for the fashion magazine Runway, and gets to be interviewed by the editor in chief,Miranda Priestly, the one who wants to hire her as her junior personal assistant.

Although at first Miranda is not impressed with her,due to her looks and lack of interest in fashion, she decides to hire her, due to her speech.

Miranda is very demanding, having her work from early to late hours, and Andrea decides to stick with the job, as her connection to Runway can get her the dream job she hopes for ,in journalism.

After Miranda complains to her for not being able to fly her home during a hurricane, she approaches Nigel, Runway's art director, who gives her a makeover, and she finally dresses to Miranda's liking.

This job alienates Andrea from her friends, as she starts missing important events, Miranda needing her 24/7.

The movie is entertaining, and sees this girl, transforming from a moth to a butterfly, on the outside, while losing her friends little by little, who don't understand how important her job is to her (there's a scene in which they take her phone, when Miranda calls her, which I found very immature, as she could have lost her job, as Miranda wants them to answer all the time, not answering resulting in being fired).

Through the movie, Andrea finds what's important to her, and grows. The other characters seem to stay the same.

The soundtrack was so and so.

The acting was good, I loved Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt,in that order. Speaking of Meryl Streep, she created Miranda's look based on two different women.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen plays a small role. Fashion designer Valentino makes a cameo appearance.

Lauren Weisberger, the writer, makes a cameo, as the twins' (Miranda's kids) nanny. Heidi Klum and Brooklyn Decker make second, blink it and you'll miss it, cameo appearances.

The movie received positive reviews, the critics praising Meryl Streep's acting.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Glenn Close were considered before Meryl Streep, for the role of Miranda. Rachel McAdams and Kate Hudson turned down the role of Andrea, while Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst were considered for the part. In contrast to Rachel and Kate, Anne Hathaway allegedly repeatedly tried to get the part, until they finally hired her.

Whenever I read about how many actors were considered for a part, I can never imagine them acting the role, as I find the ones cast to be a perfect fit.

The movie grossed 327 million dollars against a budget of around 41 million.

The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, put the movie on the top ten list movies of the year 2006.

The movie was nominated for 3 Golden Globes, Meryl Streep winning Best Actress, and 2 Oscars (one for Meryl Streep, again, being her 14th Oscar nomination!).The movie received many more awards nominations, including 5 BAFTAs, with Meryl Streep being nominated for Best Actress. Emily Blunt was also nominated for a few awards, including a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.

CinemaScore audiences gave the movie a B, on an A+ to F scale.

The movie is for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv, Fandango at Home.
