The movie was written and directed by Neil Jordan, and is based on the Graham Greene 1951 novel of the same name. The movie is a remake of the 1955 movie of the same name.

The movie opens with writer Maurice Bendrix, who writes what he calls a diary of hate. He narrates the story, and recalls meeting Henry Miles, one rainy evening, while the man was walking in the rain without an umbrella.

Henry offers to take him home, and remembers Sarah, the man’s wife, Maurice had an affair with until 2 years ago.

Henry confesses he thinks Sarah is having an affair, and Maurice offers to go to a detective, and have her followed.

When he leaves, Sarah comes home, and is surprised to see him there.

Maurice remembers how he met Sarah, in the summer of 1939, and how her marriage to Henry was conventional,having been married for 10 years. From the moment they see each other, there seems to be a spark. Talking to the both of them, he agrees to take Sarah to the movie made after one of his books.After the movie they go to a restaurant, and discuss the book and the movie which is nothing like it. Then go to her place, and have s3x on the couch, right before her husband gets home.

Their love affair takes place during the war, which didn’t bother them.

In the present, he hires a detective to follow her, and he thinks she is cheating again, although the man seems to be a priest.

Sarah calls him, wanting to see him, and he pretends to be busy. When he finally sees her, he is cold towards her, because she just left him one day after a b0mb dropped onto their house, without any explanation, while she tells him he has nothing to avenge.

As the private investigator follows her around, Maurice remembers the passion he loved her with, and how he was jealous of everything, including her stockings (for being so close to her all day long) or shoes (for taking her away from him) .

One day, the private investigator following her around, steals her diary while she and her husband had a party, and Maurice reads it, finding out her side of the story. The story of a woman, who after seeing him dead on the staircase, prayed to God to bring him back, promising to never see him again.

I personally enjoyed the movie, it’s one of my favorites. I liked the way it was directed, the way emotion is conveyed.You can feel the love between the characters, the attraction, because there’s time dedicated to the blooming love, and how the characters feel about each other, through what they do and say to each other.

Sarah finds God after she prays for Maurice to live, and during the 2 years in which she didn’t see him, she kept on going to church.

Maurice, on the other hand, became bitter, hating God for taking the woman he loved away from him.

I felt bad for Henry as he was a good man, who didn’t deserve all this, who even after finding out about the 2 of them, didn’t hate them, and stayed with Sarah for the worse SPOILER as she gets sick.

I liked the interior design, everything was so beautiful.

The acting was good.

The soundtrack was good, beautiful and sad.

The visual effects were good.

The movie received positive reviews from the critics and the audiences of the Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and IMDB platforms.

The movie grossed almost 11 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 23 million dollars, being a flop, but was nominated for 10 BAFTA awards (the British equivalent to the Oscars), 4 Golden Globes and 2 Oscars, among many other award nominations.
