Levi Kane, a retired elite sniper and veteran, tired with the life he's been living, is given a secret mission by the Western authorities.
Drasa, a Lithuanian elite sniper working for the Kremlin, is told she was filmed by a drone on her last mission, so she needs to lay low for a while.
Levi is being parachuted (I found this ridiculous. What if he couldn't find the place?!They didn't even give him instructions, about how to work in that tower, and whatever was in that gorge.) to a remote location in the mountains, having to hike for about a day or two to a tower near a fog surrounded gorge.
His predecessor is still there (luckily), so he gives him a tour and tells him about the place, before his one year shift ends at midnight. He tells him the tower on the other side belongs to Russia, or the Eastern front, as the place has the UK, USA and communist, probably, Soviet Union flag.
The man leaves the next day, and a helicopter finds him at probably the same remote location they were left at, and after being asked his name, is being shot.
Levi's mission starts in October.
One day, Levi hears noise from the other side, and checks to see what's happening. He sees a woman cutting wood.
In November is Drasa's birthday, so she decides to contact Levi, and they start talking through what they write on notebooks ( Drasa sure has a lot of them!) looking through their advanced binoculars.
On the 14th of February, Drasa is sad, because her father told her he'll k1ll himself on this day. She writes to Levi, she wishes he was there.
Levi takes that to heart, so he starts thinking about how to get to the other side.
He gets to the other side, they have a romantic encounter, and upon return, his rope breaks, and he falls into the gorge. Drasa goes after him without a second thought.
They find out there's another world down there, one in which the biological beings merged with the plants, due to an experiment gone wrong.
Now they must find a way out,as they're being hunted by the people who turned into trees, who live down there. They must also work against the clock, as the longer they stay, the more likely it is for them to get contaminated (Drasa was even stabbed by one of those contaminated trees, but she was fine. eye roll!) and turn into one of those 'hollow men', as one of Levi's predecessors called them.
I personally enjoyed the movie. It reminded me of the Russian movie, Superdeep (2020), but with better acting.
I liked the vibe of the movie, sustained by the haunting score, the bond formed between these two snipers, and the world below, covered in the fog which turned them into something other-worldly.
What I didn't like what Drasa's haircut which didn't grow one inch in 6 months. She was also very thin, which I don't think was her choice, but the choice of the ones in Hollywood who want the women as skinny as possible and the men as big as possible!
One bit of movie trivia: the spec script for The Gorge was voted one of the best unproduced scripts of 2020 on the Black List of unproduced screenplays.
I liked the visual effects.
The acting was good.
The soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was great, the score and the songs chosen for the movie.
The Gorge was released for streaming on AppleTv+ on Valentine's Day,being the platform's biggest launch for a movie ever! You can watch it for free for 7 days on AppleTv+, and AppleTv+ on Prime Video Channels.
Rating : Worth a watch !
