The movie is based on the Swedish Young Adult novel by Mats Wahl, originally published in 2000.The movie is a remake of the Swedish movie of the same name, released in 2002, starring Gustaf Skarsgard.

Nick is planning to skip his graduation to go to London for a writing program. His father died when he was 13, and ever since, his mother has been emotionally distant, giving him the impression she doesn't care about him.

Nick's best friend, Pete, owes money to Annie, from whom he bought dr@gs, and didn't pay back. Nick pays Annie for him, but doesn't hold back from telling her what he thinks of her, which makes her jump him. This makes them both end up in the principle's office. She gets away with it, as Nick says that she probably finds him irresistible, and the principle lets her go.

That night, Annie and her ex con boyfriend, steal a car and rob a jewelry store. Because she doesn't want to leave the jewelry with him, her boyfriend calls the cops on her, and they find the jewelry in her school locker, arresting her.

When she gets out, she thinks Pete called the cops on her because, just like the other students, he watched her being taken away! Annie and her 2 acolytes beat Pete up, and because she doesn't believe he didn't do it, he says Nick did, knowing he leaves for London.

After his mother finds his plane ticket, Nick decides not to go, and goes to the party his girlfriend invited him to. When he leaves, drunk, Annie and her buddies, with the help of Pete, find him, run him over, and beat him up, leaving him in a hole, after thinking they k1lled him.

Nick's mother calls the police the next day seeing he is missing, knowing he didn't leave for London. The police find out Annie is involved, and start following Pete after seeing he was acting weird at the search party.

Nick goes to school the next day, only to realize nobody can see him, and talk badly of him! He goes home, still having a bad opinion of his mother, and starts following people around, slowly finding out what happened to him, thinking he's dead.

When he sees a bird which flew into the window being knocked down, its spirit leaving the body, then going back into its body, he realizes he's not dead, he's in a coma!

Annie's life is not all sun and rainbows either, as her mother died, and her father (who used to be a cop) is with someone else, who can't even be bothered to cook for her little brother. This is not an excuse to be a bully though, because the things she does to other people are cr1minal (she has an anger problem, beats people up, robs and steals, leading to k1lling people).

I personally enjoyed the movie, it had beautiful landscapes, although it seemed to have been very cold, as whenever the actors talk, you can see their breaths, yet they were wearing Spring-Autumn clothes!

I liked that the characters have growth (thing which apparently is missing in the book) .

Due to his condition, Nick gets to see what his mother is going through (his mother's pain, who also went through the death of her husband, always made me cry) when he's missing, how his friends and girlfriend are really like in his absence (although,in his girlfriend's defense, he was mean to her the night before), and Annie changes, finally doing the right thing, fixing one wrong thing she did.

The actors were good.

The soundtrack by Marco Beltrami, was good.

I really liked the visual effects, they were good, they stand the test of time. They mostly consist of Nick seeing things a certain way only to be revealed he didn't do all those things, it's all in his head. SPOILER And towards the end he tries to get his body out of the water.

Unlike the original, the movie received negative reviews, and grossed almost 27 million dollars at the box office.

Cinema Score audiences graded the movie a B.
