Underworld : Awakening

Year of release : 2012

Run time : 1h25m

Genre : Action / Horror

Cast : Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, Charles Dance, Stephen Rea

The movie is the followup to the Underworld Evolution, from 2006, and the 4th installment of the series.

The movie was directed by 2 people, and written by 4 people (with many more uncredited), based on a story by Len Wiseman and John Hlavin. The movie had many story lines until the final version (she was imprisoned for longer, her daughter was older..).That would explain why the movie relays mostly on the action scenes, and doesn't have much of talking or of a plot.

The movie opens a few years after the events in the 2nd movie. Vampires and Lycans are in the open, and people hunt them down, calling what they have "the infection", starting the Purge. Selene and Michael decide to leave, and are supposed to meet on Pier 9, but when Selene gets there, Michael is being wounded, and falls into the water.

Selene jumps after him, and she wakes up in a lab.

Not knowing what happened to her, she gets out, seeing through someone else's eyes, thinking it's Michael.

A vampire is tracking her, while a detective is on her case, being told by the leader of the facility she's been imprisoned in, that it was an escaped wolf.

The vampire, David, helps her and the girl who's eyes she was seeing through, get away from the Lycans hunting them. He takes them to his vampire coven, but his father, the leader, tells him it's a bad idea, as the Lycans will follow them, and k1ll them all.

Selene finds out the girl is her daughter with Michael, as 12 years have passed since she was awake, and they were held in a lab for research.

Soon after, their coven is broken into by Lycans, hunting them ,as they want her daughter.

David wants to fight them, while his father wants no part in it, as there's only a few vampires left after The Purge.

Things might not be as they seem, as the Lycans who are supposed to be as extinct as the vampires ,seem to be more, stronger, and even bigger!

I personally didn't find the movie that amazing, it just felt generic. There's not much of a plot, and what we have is not good enough, as it feels like leftovers.

The movie is shot on these dark blue - navy colors.

I did like Selene's outfit, and the action scenes.

The movie received negative reviews from critics, who complained about the "vapid action" and the lack of story.

CinemaScore audiences gave the movie an A- on and A+ to F scale!

The movie grossed 160 million dollars world wide, against a budget of 70 million, being the highest grossing movie of the franchise.

The acting was Ok, Kate looked like she was posing most of the time. Scott Speedman, who played Michael, did not appear in the movie, the film makers using archive footage and a stand-in.

The soundtrack was Ok.

Rating : Could have been a contender!
