Paul is a projectionist, who, while playing a movie, realizes when the lights went out, the darkness made people disappear. They disappeared, but their clothes and jewelry were left behind, in the place they once were. Ironically, at the time the lights went off he was reading about the Roanoke colony which disappeared mysteriously,in 1590.Paul was wearing a headlamp at the time of the blackout.

Rosemary is a nurse in a hospital, looking for the people who once roamed the hospital hallways. She finds a man who was in surgery at the time of the blackout. The lights go out again, and he disappears.

All this time, a sort of darkness is creeping in, going away when light enters the room. Rosemary was smoking outside, when the blackout happened.

Luke wakes up in the morning, with candles lit next to him ,and he blows them out. He realizes his girlfriend is not home yet, and that there’s no electricity, a puddle of water being on the kitchen floor from the fridge.

He walks outside, reading yesterday’s newspaper, unaware of the piles of clothes on the floor, all around.

3 days later, Luke is looking for batteries for his flashlights, and finds a bar which still has electricity, as there’s no power in the whole city, and the sun rises every day much later than the usual, and sets much earlier, until he fears there’ll be no light anymore. Also, the batteries, and whatever else he carries which makes light, only last for a little while, as if the darkness is feeding off the electricity/energy.

Luke finds a 12 year old kid in the bar, waiting for his mother, who went to the church, which was not far away from the bar, but in the darkness which creeps in, it’s a different story.

The bar has a generator, but it seems not to be able to last for long, as they don’t have much gas left, and they use all the lights in the place, and play loud music.

Rosemary comes in, out of her mind, looking for her baby.

They also find Paul outside, screaming, and when they bring him inside, he says he was hit in the head by one of the shadow people, and was taken somewhere, where he was fighting to exist.

He thinks maybe an experiment went wrong, while Rosemary, being religious, thinks some kind of rapture happened.

Luke states the obvious, that whatever is outside in the darkness, entered the bar, and is trying to take out the light to get them.

There’s whispers in the darkness or the shade, which mostly say “I exist”, and later we find out that’s what people say right before the darkness takes them.

The darkness takes the shape of people, sometimes sounding like relatives of the ones who are still alive.

The movie started well, it was mysterious, I was intrigued, but it doesn’t go anywhere, there’s no explanation for what happened, and it’s just 4 characters in the whole movie, like everybody else is gone, only they remained.

The actors were good, especially Thandiwe Newton. I felt Hayden Christensen was the only one who didn’t give 100%.

The visual effects were good.

The soundtrack was good, I liked it.

The reviews and ratings from the critics and the audience are under 50 on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, and holds a 4.9 rating on IMDB.
