The paranormal romantic horror comedy, written and directed by Jonathan Levine is based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion, published in 2010, which was inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet ( at the balcony scene, the Romeo and Juliet scene came to mind!).

8 years after a zombie apocalypse, R, a zombie, wanders around an airport, slowly recalling the world before, putting thoughts together. He lives in an airplane, and listens to music, as he likes to collect things, dreading the thought that one day he'll become like the 'bonies' a version of the zombies who's fully crossed into the dead realm, hunting all living things just to continue its existence.

R has a best friend with whom he just sits around, staring at each other, trying to speak, but mostly grunting, almost saying words.

One of those times, they decide to go into the city to get food.

In one of the last remaining human enclaves, Julie and her friends are sent by her father to hunt for medical supplies.

The two parties end up in the same place, and they start fighting. R notices Julie, and he hears music (falls in love). Her boyfriend shoots R, so R jumps him, and eats his brain so he won't come back as a zombie. When eating the brain, the zombies can get their victim's memories ( this didn't make any sense), and he sees his memories with Julie, feeling alive.

When his zombie friends try to eat her, R rescues her, putting zombie blood on her face to disguise her scent. And takes her to his layer (as he wants to keep her).

He tries to communicate with her, telling her he keeps her safe, and tells her in a few days she can go home.

Julie tries to flee, but zombies are drawn to her scent, and R rescues her just in time.

They start spending time together, hunting for food for Julie, listening to vinyl records, and driving a beautiful car.

When Julie decides to leave, although he doesn't want to part with her, R decides to help her get home.

The movie was Ok, it felt like a zombie fan fiction movie. It has action scenes and funny moments.

The characters have growth, like R, who, start becoming more and more human, and even his zombie friends, like his bestie, M.

What didn't make sense, was how does eating someone's brains gives one their memories, 'cause I eat chicken and pork brain, and I don't get their memories!

The whole zombie thing, and how it works in this world was ridiculous to me, how can something dead for so long, without a heartbeat, come back to life, the coagulated blood turn normal, especially since it kept on feeding the same way,not to mention the decomposition process which it's irreversible; and how does the zombies k1lling and eating people to survive go with coming back among the humans? Doesn't that make the person who was a zombie a k1ller and cannibal?! From the movie it seemed it didn't count, it was like temporal madness.

This movie was more like "The beauty and the beast" than "Romeo and Juliet". I'm sorry, I didn't get the appeal.

The visual effects were so and so, the 'bonies' zombies kinda looking CGI.

The actors were good.

The soundtrack was good.

The movie grossed 117 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of 35 million!

The critics gave it mixed reviews, and the CinemaScore audiences gave it a B+ on an A+ to F scale.

The movie is 30 days free on Movie Sphere on Amazon Channels, with subscription on USA Network; for rent / sale on Amazon, AppleTv, Fandango at Home. And from the 1st of June it's gonna be streaming for free on Plex and The Roku Channel.

Rating : Worth a watch !
