Wuthering Heights
Year of release : 2011
Run time : 2h9m
Genre : Drama
The movie is based on Emily Bronte's book of the same name, published in 1847, and only focuses on the part with Heathcliff and Catherine, without covering the events after her death. It was co-written and directed by Andrea Arnold.
Catherine's father brings a boy to their home in Wuthering Heights one evening, whom he names Heathcliff. He said he found him on the streets of Liverpool. He is a boy of color.
Catherine spits on him the first time she sees him.
Catherine's brother hates Heathcliff and beats him whenever he gets the chance. Catherine and Heathcliff befriend, and spend time together, in these long scenes about nothing, hearing the wind. There's this scene in which they play or fight in the mud (Wuthering Heights seems pretty poor, with mud all around, to the point they can barely walk!), after she throws mud at him, and he pins her down, gets on top of her, with his legs on her chest, and smears mud on her face! I mean, it doesn't get more romantic than that!
Checking the Linton manor, the Linton dog attacks Catherine. Once inside their house, they treat Heathcliff like he's the one who bit her ankle, not their dog, and throw him out.
Catherine remains at the manor until she gets well, for a few months.
When she gets back, she's a different girl, as she doesn't like Heathcliff anymore.
The movie is all shot from Heathcliff's perspective. He's in all the scenes. He is also a person of color, as in the book he is described as having dark skin.
This movie is atrocious, it's only gonna get half a star from me, for the colors, landscapes and the Linton manor! Most of the time everything happens in slow motion, and there's not much dialogue involved! I watched it on fast forward and it looked normal, I felt like fast forwarding the fast forward! It was no need for it to be this long!!
There's this scene in which Catherine as a kid, licks Heathcliff's back wounds after he was beaten (this doesn't exist in the book!), and the director said it was her invention to suggest the "primal, animalistic and intense bond" between the characters! I'm honestly sick of seeing the movie makers putting their perversions in their movies!
The whole time I watched the movie ,I felt like being inside someone's twisted mind!
The movie has scenes of animal cruelty, as Heathcliff (the actor was a child ) k1lls a sheep (he stabs it in the neck and they filmed the animal dying, fighting for its life!F@k off movie!), and in another scene he hangs a dog (I know that in the book Heathcliff hangs Isabella's dog). At the end, a small kid hangs the dog by the collar, and again, the camera lingers on it, showing us the dog struggling! WTF ?!? You have been warned!
Oh, and Catherine's brother's wife gives birth while standing ,outside, in the cold, so Heathcliff can see it!
The Wuthering Heights manor is dirty, so are the people inside it, who look poor and dirty.
Heathcliff and Catherine, although teenagers, share the same room, and dress in front of each other, in that day of age!
The movie doesn't have a soundtrack!! A few (2) characters sing or hum a song, and that's it, the rest of the movie is silent! At the end of the movie they finally play a song, as the credits roll!
The movie grossed 1.7 million dollars against a budget of 5 million British pounds.
In the making since 2008, the movie first had Natalie Portman attached to the project. She withdrew a few months later (probably after reading the amazing script!) when Michael Fassbender was attached to the project to play Heathcliff (he would have made a great Heathcliff!) and Abbie Cornish replacing Portman to play Catherine. A year later the director and cast changed again, as Ed Westwick and Gemma Arterton signed as the leads. In 2010, director Andrea Arnold took over the project, with Kaya Scodelario to play Catherine.
Apparently this trash wowed the pre-Cannes Festival party goers (I think it was the trailer though)!
